Buying Guide for Dog Coats

Dog coats are more than just a fashionable accessory. They can have considerable added health benefits, prevent diseases and alleviates complaints in dogs that are already ill.

Small dogs can be at a disadvantage in bad weather. With their short legs, they are more exposed to the cold ground. Their sensitive little tummy region cools down more quickly.

With the lovely British weather, a warm and waterproof coat is a great idea for winter walks regardless of what breed of dog your adventuring with.

We've researched and short-listed the Best Dog Coats available in the UK for 2022. Dog coats that not only protect your pooch from the elements, but will ensure they always look insta-ready.

Features to Consider

Before you jump straight in and buy a dog coat, let's take a look at some of the features which you may wish to consider.

Range of sizes

Crucially, check that the design you've set your heart on is available in a size to suit your dog. Owners of smaller breeds will definitely find a wider range of styles on offer.

Ease of fastening

What do you prefer ? Pop studs or velcro? There are pros and cons of each option. Velcro gives more flexibility for size adjustment, but can get caught and tear if your dog disappears into the undergrowth.

Waterproof potential

If you're looking at a dog coat to withstand the British winter, waterproof or water-resistant is a no-brainer. The best waterproof jackets and coats will keep your dog dry, whatever the weather.

Harness attachment

For those of you who prefer a harness to a collar, look for a dog coat with a harness attachment opening. Then your dog can simply wear their dog coat over their harness.

Trouble-free cleaning

Machine washable is always a stress free solution especially for those pups that simply love muddy puddles.

This can vary considerably. Hopefully we've included a range of price points to suit everyone's pocket.

With something for everyone, let's take a look at the Dog Coats that made our Top 10.

Looking for a dog coat to protect in the worst weather that the British winter has to throw at you ?

1. Ancol Stormguard Dog Coat

Best waterproof dog coat overall

The Stormguard design from family pet brand Ancol, has been inspired by professional outdoor pursuits equipment. It certainly does the job of keeping your dog warm and dry throughout the winter months.

Ancol stormguard dog coat

Suitable for all weathers it has a hardwearing, waterproof outer layer and a lovely soft and warm fleece inner lining.

A chest cover protects your dog against puddle splashes which gives it added warmth too.

For harness wearing dogs, the coat incorporates a zip opening on the back to feed the lead through and attach to the harness worn beneath the coat.

It incorporated a reflective edging band for safety when the clocks change and the nights close in and is machine washable.

The only potential downside to this coat is the velcro stomach strap. Whilst the velcro means it's fully adjustable to fit, any excess strap can tend to flap around.

Available in a really wide range of sizes to fit extra small to large dogs and in a choice of colours ( although this chocolate brown colour is our favourite!)

Admittedly this coat from Embark is water-resistant not waterproof so not recommended for keeping your dog dry during heavy downpours.

Made from 75% cotton and 25% polyester it has a padded, tartan inner layer to offer extra protection from the cold.

Super easy to take on and off, it fits snugly around the body and neck with wide, adjustable velcro straps.

3. Morezi Dog Rain Coat

Best value waterproof coat for dogs

If you're looking for a waterproof coat with some padding suitable for rain not snow, then the Morezi waterproof jacket might be perfect.

This great value dog jacket has a fully waterproof outer and a polyester fleece lining so it's durable yet comfortable to wear.

The coat is secured with a velcro neck strap and a girth strap. It's worth noting that the girth strap secures underneath not on your dog's back (like the Ancol Stormguard coat featured).

Although it's the cheapest coat featured, it does have some good design features.

A 10 cm hole for the lead to attach to your harness and reflective edging for night walking have been included in this rain coat.

The size chart suggests adding 1 or 2 inches to the back and girth measurements, and be aware that the reviews suggest that the coat does come up on the small size.

4. Kurgo Loft Dog Coat

Best designed warm dog coat

This stylish reversible and great quality dog coat from Kurgo is ideal to keep your dog cosy during the chilly winter months when out on walks, hikes and runs.

The key selling point of the Kurgo loft coat is that it is super lightweight but incredibly warm. It works to keep your dog's core warm and insulated without adding extra weight.

Made of water resistant material it is designed to be comfortable to wear and can be layered with a fleece for extra cold days.

It has an adjustable velcro belly strap but a fixed collar, so it's important to get a fairly accurate collar measurement.

We loved that the 'under-belly' of the coat attaches with velcro on either side. This means that you don't get loose velcro straps which can tear when caught on undergrowth.

Available in a choice of stylish and reversible colour combinations like this coastal blue/orange.

The design includes an opening on the back to allow access to your dog’s harness to attach a lead. This close up photo shows the two zips that move so the position of the harness and the coat line up perfectly.

The additional reflective piping means it's easy to spot your dog when it gets dark early.

Available in a range of sizes. We felt that with the neck and chest measurements the corresponding coat length was quite short on Freddie ( 12kg Cockapoo) , but it will obviously depend on your dog's measurements. Machine washable at 30°.

The main difference between the two jackets is the fastening, with Hugo & Hudson opting for a zip.

The zip fastening gives less opportunity for adjustment so ensure you measure your dog accurately. On the plus side, once you have that perfect fit, the zip is strong and unlikely to snag like velcro.

How to Measure your Dog

Take your time and measure accurately. Use a piece of string then simply lay it alongside a metre rule and make a note of the measurements. Allow a bit of extra room as it doesn't need to fit as snugly as a harness.

A diagram showing how to measure for a dog coat

If you do use a harness, look for a coat which incorporates an opening on the back.

Machine washable is crucial if your dog loves the mud.

Recheck the sizing, XL doesn't necessarily mean a Great Dane, it can mean a Spaniel!
