BUYING GUIDE FOR DOG COATS

Dog coats are more than just a fashionable accessory. They can have considerable added health benefits, prevent diseases and alleviates complaints of dogs that are already ill.

Small dogs can be at a disadvantage in bad weather. With their short legs, they are more exposed to the cold by the proximity to the ground. Their sensitive little tummy region cools down more quickly.

With the lovely British weather, a warm and waterproof coat is a great idea for winter walks regardless of what breed of dog your adventuring with.

We've researched and short-listed the Best Dog Coats available in the UK for 2021. Dog coats that not only protect your pooch from the elements, but will ensure they always look photo-ready.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Before you jump straight in and buy a dog coat, let's take a look at some of the features which you may wish to consider.

Range of sizes - Crucially, check that the design you've set your heart on is available in a size to suit your dog. Owners of smaller breeds will definitely find a wider range of styles on offer.

Ease of fastening - What do you prefer ? Pop studs or velcro? There are pros and cons of each option. Velcro gives more flexibility for size adjustment, but can get caught and tear if your dog disappears into the undergrowth. Buttons, studs and zips are more secure but may not offer the size adjustment.

Waterproof potential - If you're looking at a coat to withstand the british winter, waterproof is a no-brainer. The best waterproof jackets and coats will keep your dog dry, whatever the weather.

Harness attachment - For those of you who prefer a harness to a collar, look for a dog coat with a harness attachment opening.

Trouble-free cleaning - machine washable is always the stress free solution.

Design - From the simply gorgeous to the more functional, we've tried to include a whole range.

Price - This can vary considerably. Hopefully we've included a range of price points to suit everyone's pockets.

With something for everyone, let's take a look at the Dog Coats that made our Top 10.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR DOG

Take your time and measure accurately. Use a piece of string then simply lay it alongside a metre rule and make a note of the measurements. Allow a bit of extra room as it doesn't need to fit as snugly as a harness.

A diagram showing how to measure your dog for a dog coat

If you do use a harness, look for a coat which incorporates an opening on the back.

Machine washable is crucial if your dog loves the mud.

Recheck the sizing, XL doesn't necessarily mean a Great Dane, it can mean a Spaniel!
