The Ultimate Guide to to Safe Water Play for Dogs

1. Keep an Eye on the Temperature

When your dog is having a blast in the water, it's easy to get caught up in the fun! But a little temperature awareness goes a long way to keeping them safe and sound.

On those scorching hot days, remember that even with a refreshing splash, the ground can still get super hot under their paws – think of it like walking barefoot on hot pavement!

Importantly, our pups can still get overheated even when wet.

So, keep an eye on them for any signs they're struggling, and always make sure their water fun is in short, sweet bursts.

And on the cooler, breezier days, your water-loving dog might not even notice how chilly they're getting when they're having so much fun.

If they're taking a dip, make sure to bring a nice big towel or a cosy dog drying robe to dry them off and warm them up once they're back on solid ground. This helps prevent them from getting too cold after their aquatic adventures.

Ultimately, whether it's warm or cool, it's always a good idea to limit the duration of water play to ensure your dog stays happy, healthy, and safe!

2. Be Aware of Water Conditions

A dog can very quickly get into trouble in water that has a current, so be careful not to let your dog stray too far or too deep. Consider using a life jacket and perhaps even a long line lead for extra safety.

On a recent visit to France, Smart Bark tested the EzyDog Life Jacket from Pets at Home. Incredibly easy to fit, it features 3 adjustable straps for a snug fit and a grab handle on the back.

It was the perfect option for safe kayaking on large, deep rivers with strong currents such as the Dordogne. We think it offers peace of mind at a great price.

Heads up! Before your dog takes a dip, check the water. Ponds and lakes, especially still ones, can hide dangerous algae, particularly the deadly blue-green kind.

This nasty algae ( also known as cyanobacteria) can produce toxins that are super risky for dogs if they drink it or even just lick their fur after swimming. Symptoms can hit fast – sometimes in minutes!

Unfortunately you can't tell if algae is toxic just by looking, so if it looks suspicious (like pea soup), steer clear! Always assume it's dangerous.

No antidote exists, so if you suspect your dog has been exposed :

  • Stop them from licking their fur.

  • Rinse them right away with clean water.

  • Get to the vet NOW – it's an emergency! Tell them you suspect blue-green algae.

When in doubt, stay on dry land to be safe.

3. Know your Dog's Exit Points

The chances are that if you have a water loving dog who just wants to dive into the nearest available lake, river or pond, they won’t be scouting for the safest entry point themselves!

That's where you come in – you're the ultimate safety supervisor!

Before your water-loving buddy takes the plunge into that inviting lake, river, or pond, give it a quick check. Make sure there's a nice, gentle slope or an easy spot for them to hop in and out without any drama.

You're making sure their big splash is nothing but pure, safe fun!

4. Smart Water Games for Pups

We all know that look: eyes glued to the floating toy, tail wagging a million miles an hour, ready to launch themselves into the water for another epic fetch! It's pure joy, and it's awesome to watch.

But as much fun as they're having, some dogs get a little too enthusiastic and end up gulping down more water than they should.

To keep the fun flowing (and avoid upset tummies!), here are a couple of friendly tips:

Pick a Floating Dog Toy: Opt for toys that float high on the water like the BOB: The 3-in-1 Dog Dummy. This means less frantic diving and less accidental drinking for your eager beaver.

Take a "Paws" for a Break: Even the most dedicated water dog needs a rest! Set a time limit for water fetch, or simply switch to land-based games for a bit. That way, the fun doesn't have to stop, and your dog gets a well-deserved break from all that splashing and swallowing.

Keep these in mind, and you'll ensure your water-loving buddy has a fantastic, safe time in the wet stuff!

5. Don’t Force it!

Last but not least, as desperate as you might be to show your dog how fun playing and swimming in water can be, if your dog’s reluctant, don’t force it!

Trying to force a dog to do anything will only lead to a dog who’s more anxious, more fearful and less trusting of you.

Instead, start near shallow water and positively reinforce your dog for an interest or interaction. One of my top tips is to play tug or fetch near the water, or go for a paddle yourself to show your dog it’s safe - and fun!
