A selection of cleaning products tested in homes with dogs

In this guide we cover everything a dog owner needs: the best carpet cleaners for dog hair and stains, pet-safe mops for hard floors, stain removers for accidents, furniture protection, and our top pick for grooming vacuums that tackle hair at the source. All tested in real homes with real dogs.

We love our dogs, but let’s be honest, sharing a home with a furry friend isn’t all cuddles and tail wags. There are pawprints on the sofa, mysterious marks on the floor, and that unmistakable “dog smell” that somehow sneaks in even when you’ve just cleaned.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve been on a full-on mission: testing a whole range of cleaning products in real-life dog chaos.

We’ve mopped, vacuumed, sprayed, and even used a grooming vacuum on everything from muddy paws to tumble-rolled fur on sofas. And yes, we probably tested some of them more than once… for science.

The results? Some products exceeded our expectations, some made us shake our heads, and a few were surprising little lifesavers we can’t live without.

If you’re ready to tackle muddy paws, rogue hair tumbleweeds, and those “oh no” smells without any nasty chemicals, grab a cup of coffee (or your dog’s favourite chew) and read on.

We’re sharing our honest, tried-and-tested picks for keeping your home clean and your pup happy.

📆 UPDATE : MARCH 2026 We've added the Smart Bark Clean-Up Kit section to help readers who are looking for the short answer to their cleaning problem first

Our Picks of the Best Home Cleaning Products for Dog Lovers

Carpet cleaners for dog owners need to do more than clean, they need to remove embedded pet hair from fibres, neutralise urine odour that regular vacuuming leaves behind, and ideally include upholstery attachments for sofas and stairs. Here's what we found works best.

1. Best carpet cleaner for dog hair and stains

BISSELL ProHeat 2x Revolution Pet Pro

Love your dog but not the inevitable mess that comes with them ?

What you need my friend is a carpet cleaner, they're like vacuum cleaners but on steroids.

Designed to effectively remove ingrained dirt and grime from carpets by applying a solution of water and detergent, they then use powerful brush heads that penetrate deep into the fibres.

You know what's super satisfying? Actually seeing all the dirt being lifted out of your carpet! The Pro Pet cleaner from BISSELL has a clear base, which is just brilliant because you can literally watch all that grime disappear right before your eyes! It's strangely addictive!

photograph : smart bark

And I thought my carpet was clean! I was absolutely stunned at the dirt extracted from my lounge carpet. The dirty water tank has a 3.7l capacity, so you can easily clean up to 40 sqm of carpet on one tank.

In testing, I was not only amazed at the results but drying time impressed me too. On Express mode the carpet was dry in about 30 minutes.

Whereas lots of rivals simply offer a standard carpet cleaner, BISSELL takes the design a step further and offers a line of cleaners specifically for us pet lovers.

In addition to the BISSELL carpet cleaner, you've find a whole host of nifty gadgets included with the Pet Pro - Pet Hair Upholstery Tool, 3-in-1 Stair Tool and a selection of trial size solutions so you can get started straight away.

Bissell cleaning products on a countertop, including pet stain remover and a 2-in-1 upholstery tool.
photograph : smart bark

The real star though for dog lovers is the ingenious 2 in 1 Pet Upholstery Tool. This innovative attachment has its own mini dirty water tank, so when you're dealing with pet messes like dog urine or poo, you can rest assured that the dirty water won't contaminate the main machine.

If you are looking for a great carpet cleaner, then the BISSELL ProHeat 2x Revolution Pet Pro deserves a place on your shortlist.

Long term Test - We've been using our BISSELL for almost a year now. It's still incredibly useful and

Our Verdict : The BISSELL ProHeat 2x Revolution Pet Pro is our top pick for dog owners with carpets. It deep-cleans ingrained hair and stains better than anything else we've tested at this price point.

Why we recommend it

  • Pulls embedded dog hair and stains from carpet fibres better than anything else we've tested at this price

  • The 2-in-1 Pet Upholstery Tool has its own dirty water tank, keeping pet mess completely separate from the main machine

  • Express mode dries carpets in around 30 minutes, no tiptoeing around for hours

  • Covers up to 40 sqm on a single tank, enough for most living rooms in one go

Worth knowing

  • Carpets only - not suitable for hard floors

  • It's a big machine, so think about storage before you buy

  • Noisy on higher settings, which may unsettle nervous dogs

Want to compare before you commit? See how the VAX measures up - VAX Platinum SmartWash Pet-Design Carpet Cleaner Review

Spot cleaners are the unsung heroes of dog ownership, the thing you grab at 11pm when your dog has had an accident on the rug and you need to deal with it now, not when you can get the full carpet cleaner out. A good one needs to be quick to set up, effective on fresh stains, and compact enough to live somewhere accessible rather than buried in a cupboard. The best ones also tackle upholstery, which is where a lot of dog mess actually ends up.

2. Best portable spot cleaner for dog accidents

VAX SpotWash

You don’t always need a full-sized carpet cleaner - just a trusty sidekick for your dog’s smaller messes.

VAX SpotWash Home Pet-Design & Car and tool collection
photograph : smart bark

If you’re looking for a compact carpet cleaner suited to dealing with marks and stains as opposed to cleaning a whole carpet, then take a closer look at the VAX SpotWash Home Pet- Design & Car.

It’s smaller, lighter (weighs 4.5kg) and way easier to stash than your average carpet cleaner. The clean (1.1L) and dirty (720ml) water tanks are compact too, which makes for a perfect portable design.

In testing we loved how simple the machine was to use. The clean water tank even has handy 'fill lines' for water and the VAX cleaning solution, so there's no guesswork involved, which we thought would be super handy if you're in a rush to tackle a spillage whilst it's fresh.

Plus, with its generous hose (1.25m) and extra-long power cord (a whopping 5.5m!), you can zip around furniture and reach every nook and cranny without playing 'musical outlets'. We think that this is a great design that stressed new puppy parents will appreciate.

This little cleaner also comes with a whole squad of tools, each ready to take on a different kind of mess.

A close-up of a vax cleaning tool removing stains from a beige fabric with leaf patterns.
photograph : smart bark

We loved the Wide Tool with it's larger head on bigger spills or stains - perfect when you're toilet training your pup. However, the smaller Messy Clean Up Tool was super handy for tackling stubborn marks in tight spaces or on upholstery when we found the Wide Tool simply too wide.

There's also a SpinScrub™ Tool with automatic rotating bristles, designed to work on ground-in grime, this we can certainly recommend on hard working areas like door mats and rugs.

We were super impressed with how this pocket sized gem dealt with our back door mat.

Whichever tool you choose, when the stain-busting mission is complete, just dump the yucky water, give the tank and tools a quick rinse, and you're done!

We found in testing that cleaning the tools and machine post clean was a breeze. The VAX SpotWash comes apart, so you're not struggling with left over dirt and grime.

Its wonderfully compact size (30cm tall) means it can fit into even the smallest storage spaces, patiently waiting for its next heroic rescue.

And as a super sweet bonus if you buy direct from VAX, it comes with a 3-Piece Car Cleaning Tool Kit and a VAX Stain Removals Solution Kit. Talk about versatility – your home and your car will thank you!

If you're looking to tackle a small area of carpet, rug or upholstery then the VAX SpotWash Home Pet- Design & Car is a great option. Small and compact it's ideal if you're short on storage space and super easy to use with great results.

Our Verdict : The spot cleaner we actually reach for when something goes wrong, it's compact, quick to set up, and genuinely effective on fresh dog accidents. A must-have for puppy owners in particular.

Why we recommend it

  • Quick to set up, effective on fresh accidents

  • Compact enough (30cm tall, 4.5kg) to live in a small cupboard and be there when you need it

  • The 5.5m cord and 1.25m hose mean you can move freely around furniture without switching outlets

  • Multiple tools included, plus a car cleaning kit if bought direct from VAX

Worth knowing

  • Not built for whole-room cleaning, for that, the BISSELL above is the right tool

Hard floors might seem easier to keep clean than carpet, but dog owners know the reality: a thin film of paw prints, dried splash marks, and fine hair that a regular mop just pushes around rather than picks up. What you actually need is a system, a cleaning solution that neutralises odour at a chemical level rather than masking it with fragrance, paired with a mop head that picks up hair and dander on a dry pass before you introduce any liquid. Here's the combination that worked best for us.

3. Best mop for dog owners with hard floors

Bona Pet System

Let’s face it, living with four-legged friends means your hard floors are on a wild adventure! If you’re looking for the ultimate mop and cleaner duo that can handle pet parent life, banish hairy tumbleweeds, muddy paw prints, and the occasional “Whoops, not in the kitchen !” incident we might have the answer.

Dog on wooden floor next to Bona pet microfiber mop and cleaner.
photograph : smart bark

And if it's not too much to ask, you also need a cleaning solution that's pet-friendly and can neutralise odours so you don't get repeat accidents.

Let me introduce you to the Bona Pet System. Bona has been supplying cleaning products for both residential and commercial spaces worldwide, including sports arenas, shops, and museums since 1919 - so it's safe to say they know a thing or two about keeping floors clean !

We tested their Super Hero combination - the Pet System Microfibre Mop alongside their Hard-Surface Floor Deep Cleaner Solution.

A dog sits on a kitchen floor beside a Bona Pet System mop, cleaning spray, and microfibre pads
photograph : smart bark

First let's talk about the cleaning solution. Completely safe to use with pets, the Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner is formulated with OxyPower technology, using hydrogen peroxide to tackle pet-related messes like urine, muddy prints, and fur.

Plus instead of masking odours, it neutralises and eliminates them, using it's Odour Guard Technology. So it works to discourage repeat puppy accidents (they do love to choose a spot), whilst keeping your home smelling fresh. It goes without saying that the pet-friendly cleaning solution is designed free from harsh artificial fragrances, making it safer for both pets and people.

Onto the mop. Now we think this has some really thoughtful design features. It's lightweight with a telescopic handle, ergonomic grip and swivel head for getting right into the corners. The best bit ? It has an extra large mop head to cover the floor faster. We also liked that the mop head folds up for easy storage.

It comes with two dedicated reusable velcro pads -

🫧 Microfibre Sweeping Pad - use dry for sweeping up hair and dander efficiently

🫧 Microfibre Deep Clean Pad - use with solution for deep cleaning

So what did we think ?

Truthfully, we're not usually the most patient when it comes to mopping! The usual routine involves frantic figure-eights, slopping water everywhere with the mop bumping into skirting boards.

Bona Pet System Premium Pet Microfibre Mop
photograph : smart bark

But using this mop from Bona was fairly effortless.

The mop felt lightweight and was easy to guide around. Apparently the larger pads means it cleans 20% faster compared to leading competitors. We don't know about that, but it did cover our floors in no time.

What really impressed us was how easily the slim head swivelled right into corners, under appliances and along cupboards - with soft-edges to avoid scratching any skirting boards.

Pet-friendly mop and cleaning solution
photograph : smart bark

As it was so lightweight, we didn’t expect it to be so effective on tough, stubborn patches, especially on wooden floors. It worked exceptionally well removing most marks in one pass.

It's worth mentioning that there was no strong, artificial chemical odour that many cleaning solutions leave behind. Not here, all scent-free and pet-safe.

In between cleans, the sweeping pad made a great hassle-free alternative to the broom. It worked really well and seemed to attract the dust and dander plus it was easy to manouvere under chairs and tables.

mopping the floor with pet-friendly mop
photograph : smart bark

Finally, we should mention that eco-friendliness is another bonus. These pads can be thrown in the wash up to 500 times, and the mop itself is partly made from recycled plastic bottles (up to 50%), so you can feel better about your carbon paw print while keeping your house spotless.

Our verdict: The smartest hard floor setup we've found for dog households. The pet-safe formula neutralises odour rather than masking it, and the mop itself is a pleasure to use. Worth every penny if you have wooden, tiled, or laminate floors.

Why we recommend it

  • Neutralises pet odour at a chemical level rather than masking it, actively discourages dogs from returning to the same spot

  • Free from harsh artificial fragrances and safe for pets once dry

  • The swivel head gets into corners and under appliances without bumping skirting boards

  • Pads are washable up to 500 times and the mop is partly made from recycled plastic bottles

Worth knowing

  • Only useful if you have hard floors

4. Best vacuum for removing dog hair at source

OneIsAll Grooming Vacuum

Meet Otis, our very handsome black Labrador tester. He is an absolute dream of a dog, but when it comes to moulting, he takes it seriously. Brushing Otis usually means heading straight to the garden, because doing it indoors quickly turns into a full scale clean up operation.

A black labrador lying on a bed
photograph : smart bark

So, we put the OneIsAll Pet Grooming Vacuum to the test to see if it could finally make indoor brushing possible, without dog hair floating through the house.

The idea is simple but clever. You groom your dog as normal, but the vacuum captures the loose hair as you brush. For a double coated Labrador like Otis, this sounded almost too good to be true.

OneIsAll Pet Grooming Vacuum
photograph : smart bark

Out of the box, the machine felt well made and lightweight with a handy carry handle. The long power lead and generous hose length immediately stood out, this would make it easy to move around Otis and reach awkward spots without constantly repositioning the unit.

It comes with a good range of attachments :

⭐️ Grooming Brush - like a ball pin slicker brush to reach deep into the coat

⭐️ Deshedding Brush - similar to a Furminator comb, easily removes loose hair and undercoat

⭐️ Crevice Tool - for tackling hair on sofas or dog beds

⭐️ Cleaning Brush - for lifting dog hair from clothing

OneIsAll Pet Grooming Vacuum brushes and attachments
photograph : smart bark

One feature we really appreciated is the adjustable suction. There are three levels to choose from, and the lowest setting is noticeably quiet, which is ideal if you have a nervous or noise sensitive dog.

OneIsAll Pet Grooming Vacuum adjustable suction control
photograph : smart bark

The dust bin is detachable with a wide opening, making it very easy to empty straight into the bin without hair getting everywhere. Setup is straightforward too. Simply attach the tool you want, choose your suction level, and you are ready to go.

So, how did it perform?

Pet Grooming Vacuum deshedding attachment in testing
photograph : smart bark

Honestly, we were impressed. The suction is strong, and when the brush fills with hair, a quick press of a button releases it straight into the vacuum. Both the grooming and deshedding brushes worked brilliantly on Otis’s thick coat.

Testing the OneIsAll grooming vacuum on labrador
photograph : smart bark

In fact, we almost filled the 1.5 litre tank during our first grooming session alone.

It is also much quieter than we expected, certainly far less noisy than a hair dryer. We would recommend starting on the lowest setting and gradually increasing the power as your dog becomes more comfortable with the sound.

The hose measures 158 cm, which gave us plenty of freedom to move around Otis without feeling restricted.

Testing results a full tank of dog hair
photograph : smart bark

Overall, we were genuinely surprised by how well the OneIsAll Pet Grooming Vacuum handled Otis’s moulting. It turned what is usually a messy, outdoor job into a much cleaner and easier indoor task. If you live with a heavy shedder, this is a product we would happily recommend.

Our only wish? A cordless version would make it even more convenient.

We should mention that OneIsAll offer a range of pet grooming vacuums depending on your needs. Some include clippers, paw trimming tools and even a dryer.

Our verdict: Our top pick for reducing dog hair throughout the home, tackling it at source during grooming means less of it on your floors, sofa, and clothes. Particularly impressive for heavy shedders and double-coated breeds.

Removing hair at source is easier with regular grooming. See our guide to the best dog grooming tools.

Why we recommend it

  • Captures loose hair during brushing before it reaches your floors, furniture, and clothes, a genuine game-changer for heavy shedders

  • Three suction levels, with the lowest quiet enough for noise-sensitive dogs

  • Four attachments covering grooming, deshedding, sofas, and clothing

Worth knowing

  • Needs a power outlet, so less convenient than a cordless brush for quick touch-ups

  • Very noise-sensitive dogs may need a gradual introduction even on the lowest setting

Not every hair problem needs a powered solution. For quick touch-ups on clothing, sofa cushions, or the car seat before you head out, a good lint roller or reusable hair remover is faster and more convenient than getting any machine out. The trick is finding one that actually grips pet hair rather than just redistributing it, which, as any dog owner knows, cheaper versions have a frustrating habit of doing.

5. Best Budget Dog Hair Remover

Tydi Lint Roller

Can’t shake that stubborn dog hair from your clothes?

Meet your new best friend: the trusty lint roller!

It’s a simple little hero that costs just a few pounds but works wonders. Just roll it over your clothes or soft furnishings, and watch those sneaky hairs vanish.

Perfect for quick touch-ups and small jobs, but if you’re thinking of tackling your whole wardrobe or the couch, prepare for a bit of a sticky, time-consuming mission.

Tydi lint roller for removing dog hair
photograph : smart bark

We put this super-sticky Tydi lint roller to the test on everything from clothes to dog beds and it didn’t disappoint!

It worked a treat on black jeans (bye-bye, fur!) and tackled the loose fluff on a well-loved dog bed like a pro. Just a couple of quick rolls and the hair was history.

Total game-changer. We're officially impressed!

lint roller from Tydi
photograph : smart bark

My issue with lint rollers is that they need refills and I always forget to buy them. This little gem of a lint roller from Tydi comes with 100 sheets on each roll. Better still, you get two handles and 5 rolls (100 sheets each) in every pack so you'll always have a fresh one ready.

But what about the non-recyclable waste the sticky sheets cause I hear you cry ?

Here’s what makes Tydi stand out from the pack: their rollers are carbon-free certified!

That means the entire lifecycle of the product (from production to disposal) has been measured, emissions reduced, and any remaining carbon offset by planting trees.

In other words, they’re tackling your dog’s hair and their carbon pawprint at the same time. 🌿🐾 (Want the full scoop? Check out Tydi’s sustainability feature on Amazon!)

That's about it save for the fact that it's comfortable to use as the handle is ergonomically designed. You can buy the pack we tested or buy money-saving bumper packs with even more sheets and lint scrapers too.

Our verdict: Not glamorous, but consistently useful, this is the one we grab before leaving the house. Brilliant for a quick clean of clothing, car seats, and cushions when you don't have time for anything else.

Why we recommend it

  • The fastest way to remove dog hair from clothing and upholstery before you leave the house

  • Reusable, peel off the used layer and it's ready to go again

  • Small enough to keep one in your bag, car, and hallway

Worth knowing

  • A maintenance tool, not a substitute for a proper vacuum or carpet cleaner

Regular cleaning sprays won't fully remove dog urine, they'll clean the surface, but the proteins that cause the smell and that draw your dog back to the same spot stay behind. Enzyme cleaners work differently: they break down those proteins at a molecular level, which is why they're the only type of stain remover we'd recommend for pet accidents. What to look for is a formula that's specifically pet-safe, works on both fresh and dried stains, and is effective on fabric as well as hard surfaces.

6. Best enzyme cleaner for dog urine and stains

Simple Solution

Pee happens. But it doesn’t have to stay.

If your pup’s had a little “oops” moment, a quick clean isn’t just for your nose it helps stop your dog from turning your carpet into their personal loo.

That’s where Simple Solution Extreme Stain & Odour Remover comes to the rescue!

Simple Solutions Stain & Odour Remover
photograph : simple solution

We put this best-selling spray to the test, and WOW!, it tackled even the stinkiest accidents like a pro. Eau de dog wee? History.

And the best part? No overpowering fake perfume stink, just a mild, fresh scent that disappeared faster than a guilty pup after chewing your slipper.

The secret ingredient? Enzymes that actually break down the mess instead of just covering it up. That means your dog is way less likely to "redecorate" the same spot. Perfect for house training mishaps or those occasional senior-dog slips.

It’s safe to use on carpets, sofas, bedding, even clothes (just do a teeny patch test first, to be safe). And yes, this Extreme version is three times stronger than the original, because sometimes you need the big guns.

The spray bottle has a 3-in-1 nozzle (foam, mist, or a direct stream) making cleanup a breeze and it's available in 500ml or 945ml sizes depending on how messy your mutt is.

Bottom line? It’s a must-have for every dog owner’s cleaning kit. Your nose (and your sofa) will thank you🧼🐾💛

Our verdict: The only type of stain remover that actually works on dog urine, and this is the best version of it we've tried. Deal with accidents properly the first time and your dog is far less likely to return to the same spot.

Why we recommend it

  • Breaks down the proteins in dog urine at a molecular level, the only type of cleaner that actually removes the odour that draws dogs back to the same spot

  • Works on fresh and dried stains across carpet, upholstery, and hard floors

  • Specifically formulated to be safe for use around pets

Worth knowing

  • Needs a little dwell time to work, not an instant spray-and-wipe solution

  • For large soaked areas of carpet, follow up with a carpet cleaner to fully extract what's been broken down

Prevention is considerably easier than cleaning. A waterproof blanket on the sofa or in the car means that mud, damp fur, and the general wear a dog puts on upholstery lands on something washable rather than on the fabric underneath. What separates a good one from a frustrating one is whether it actually stays in place when your dog moves around, and whether it's genuinely waterproof rather than just water-resistant, two things that are easy to claim and surprisingly hard to deliver.

7. Best waterproof sofa blanket for dogs

Pup & Kit

Because let’s be honest, it’s way better to prevent messy accidents than mop them up later!

Ready for the next hero on your doggy must-have list? Meet the cosy, high-quality, waterproof dog blanket, your furniture’s new best friend and your sanity saver.

Pup & Kit waterproof dog blanket
photograph : smart bark

This ultimate multi-tasker shields your sofa, car seats, and outdoor furniture from dirt, fur, and those unavoidable puppy oops moments.

Got a shedding dog? A dedicated dog blanket keeps all that fur in one spot, making cleanup a breeze and saving you cash on upholstery refreshes.

A good dog blanket like the PetProtector by Pup & Kit wraps your furry buddy in luxurious Sherpa fleece comfort, plus it has a sneaky hidden waterproof layer that stops spills and mishaps right in their tracks. Perfect for puppies, elderly pups, or any furry friend with a rough day!

Protecting pet blanket
photograph : smart bark

Your furry friend will love snuggling up on the luxurious sherpa fleece while you enjoy peace of mind knowing your furniture is safe.

Available in elegant cream or grey, and sized from snug to extra large, it fits everything from crate to king-size sofa.

Sure, the cream looks fab but might need a little more washing, no worries, it’s completely machine washable and dryer-friendly.

In short: this is not just a blanket, it’s peace of mind wrapped in softness, guarding your furniture so you can snuggle up together without stress.

Our verdict: Genuinely waterproof, stays in place, and washes well, three things cheaper alternatives consistently fail at. If your dog is allowed on the sofa, this is the simplest way to protect it.

DIMENSIONS - S 74 x 48 cm | M 89 x 56 cm | Large 104 x 69 cm | X Large 121 x 72 cm

Why we recommend it

  • Genuinely waterproof, not just water-resistant so the sofa stays completely dry underneath

  • Stays in place when your dog moves around

  • Holds its waterproofing after repeated machine washes

Worth knowing

  • Only protects where it's placed, tuck it in if your dog likes to squeeze between cushions

The most effective place to stop mud spreading through your house is at the door, before it ever reaches your floors. A standard doormat makes almost no difference with a wet dog, what you need is a mat designed to trap mud and moisture in the pile and hold it there rather than transferring it to paws on the way through. Positioned just inside or outside your back door, the right mat can cut your floor cleaning time significantly, especially through autumn and winter.

8. Best dog door mat to stop mud spreading

Pet Rebellion

Ultimately, a good quality mat or rug by your door will create a barrier to capture the majority of the muck before your dog tracks it through your home and all over your floors.

Pet Rebellion dog door mat

Pet Rebellion are renowned for their collection of floor rugs, car boot mats and car seat covers and all their products are 'Inspired by Pets'.

The "Stop Muddy Paws" floor mats feature an absorbent pile that traps dirt and mud before it reaches your floors. Plus the non-slip backing with rounded corners keeps the mat securely in place, preventing slips and spills.

We love that for added convenience, these mats are machine washable, making it easier to keep your home fresh and odour-free.

Find the perfect fit for your space!  With a wide variety of styles, patterns, colours, and four available sizes, there's a "Stop Muddy Paws" mat to complement any home decor.

For ultimate comfort, check out the new Big Softie Rug, featuring an extra-plush pile treated with a super softener for a luxuriously cosy feel.

Our verdict: The most effective mud-stopping doormat we've used, it genuinely traps dirt in the pile rather than spreading it. A quiet but significant upgrade for any household with a dog that spends time outdoors.

But for next-level mud control, don’t miss our round-up of the best portable dog washers, your doormat and floors will thank you.

DIMENSIONS - 45 x 100 cm, Large 67 x 100 cm, Runner 45 x 150 cm, Big Paws 57 x 110 cm

Why we recommend it

  • Traps mud deep in the pile and holds it there rather than transferring it back to paws on the way through

  • Handles heavy use through autumn and winter without losing effectiveness

  • Far better looking than most pet-specific mats

Worth knowing

  • Needs regular shaking or vacuuming to stay effective

  • On seriously muddy days, pair it with a paw rinse or portable dog washer for best results

Scent is the last layer of a clean home, and one that dog owners often overlook until a visitor points out what they've stopped noticing. The problem with most candles and air fresheners is that they mask dog odour rather than neutralise it, and many contain fragrances or compounds that can irritate dogs' sensitive noses or airways. A genuinely dog-friendly candle uses natural ingredients, burns cleanly, and leaves a room smelling fresh rather than just different.

9. Best Dog Friendly Candle

Be:Pure Boot Room

While candles can create a lovely ambiance, not all are safe for our dogs.  Pets have a much stronger sense of smell than humans, and certain essential oils used in fragrances can be irritating or even harmful to them.

Many scented candles use paraffin wax and phthalate-based fragrances that can produce harmful fumes for our dog's sensitive snouts.

The candle market can be a minefield, so we recommend choosing a candle made specifically with dogs in mind.

Be:Pure dog candle
photograph : Be:pure

Be:Loved have created a collection of 100% natural eco-friendly pet products from paw balm to shampoo bars and have created this gorgeous smelling dog friendly candle.

The Be:Pure Boot Room Candle uses beeswax, soy and safe essentials oils. We love that this candle is formulated with enzymes which not only cover up but actually remove unwanted pet smells.

We recommend Be:Pure Boot Room Candle because it removes lingering dog odours whilst bringing the fresh and calming scents of rose, lavender and camomile to your home.

Our verdict: A lovely finishing touch for a clean home, it smells genuinely fresh rather than artificially perfumed, and you don't have to worry about it bothering your dog. Small detail, big difference.

Why we recommend it

  • Natural ingredients, no synthetic fragrances so safe to burn with your dog in the room

  • Leaves rooms smelling genuinely fresh rather than artificially scented

  • Burns cleanly with no heavy soot or residue

Worth knowing

  • Works best as a finishing layer on top of proper cleaning, not instead of it

Dog beds are one of the biggest sources of odour in a dog owner's home, and washing them every week isn't always practical. A good bed freshener used between washes neutralises odour rather than covering it, and needs to be completely safe if your dog is going to be sleeping on it immediately afterwards. This is one category where "natural" genuinely matters. Synthetic fragrances and essential oils that smell fine to us can be overpowering or even harmful to dogs.

10. Dog Bed Freshener

Be:Fresh Home & Kennel Spray

The second product from the Be:Loved range to feature - Be:fresh Prebiotic Sanitise Spray. The range is handmade in the UK and tested on humans.

Be:fresh pet bed spray and freshener
photograph : Be:fresh

If your dog's bed is starting to smell like, well… your dog's bed, Be:Fresh is the brilliant, bacteria-busting spray that sorts it between washes.

This isn't just a freshener that masks odours with a cloud of artificial fragrance. Be:Fresh uses prebiotics to actively eliminate smells, clean surfaces, kill germs, and, here's the clever bit, contains active ingredients that get back to work if re-soiling occurs.

So when your dog inevitably returns to their favourite spot, the spray is already one step ahead.

It couldn't be simpler to use. Spray liberally onto dog bedding and the surrounding area, and let it do its thing. No rinsing, no waiting, no faff.

What really sets Be:Fresh apart is what happens with regular use. Over time it creates a positive microclimate in your home where mites and other allergenic agents simply can't survive. We think that this is brilliant news for dog owners who also suffer from allergies, or anyone who wants a genuinely cleaner environment rather than just a better-smelling one.

Pet-safe, prebiotic-powered, and pleasingly practical, Be:Fresh is the unsung hero of the clean dog home.

Why we recommend it

  • Prebiotics eliminate odour at source rather than masking it

  • Kills germs and suppresses mites with regular use

  • Safe to spray directly onto bedding your dog will use straight away, no drying time needed

  • Simple enough to actually become part of a weekly routine

Worth knowing

  • Works best as a complement to regular washing, not a replacement, a freshly laundered bed will always give you the best results from the spray

Our verdict: Exactly what it promises, a quick, safe refresh for dog bedding between washes. We use it every few days and it makes a noticeable difference to how the room smells.

Why we recommend it

  • Neutralises dog bed odour between washes rather than masking it

  • Safe to spray directly onto bedding your dog will use straight away

  • Simple enough to actually become part of a regular routine

How We Chose

At Smart Bark, we only recommend products we've actually put through their paces, and when it comes to home cleaning, that means real mess, real dogs, and real homes.

Over the past couple of years, we've been building out our home cleaning guides for dog owners with the same approach we bring to every product we test: buy it, use it, form an honest opinion. No press samples accepted without full editorial independence, no recommendations based on specs alone.

Here's exactly what we looked at when putting this guide together:

Real-world testing with real dogs Every product in this guide has been tested in a home with at least one dog. That might sound obvious, but it matters. A mop that performs brilliantly on a showroom floor can be a nightmare with muddy paw prints and wet dog hair, so we tested in the conditions you actually live in, not ideal ones. Our testing dogs range from a double-coated black Labrador (hi, Otis) to shorter-haired breeds, so we could see how products coped with different types of fur.

Performance on the messes that matter most Dog homes have specific cleaning challenges that a general cleaning guide simply doesn't cover. We focused our testing on the things you actually need a product to deal with: embedded dog hair in carpet fibres, urine stains and the odour that lingers underneath, muddy paw prints on hard floors and upholstery, and that general "dog smell" that creeps in over time. If a product couldn't make a meaningful difference to at least one of these, it didn't make the cut.

Pet safety - non-negotiable We won't recommend anything that contains ingredients that could harm your dog. That means checking formulas for known irritants like certain essential oils, bleach derivatives, and artificial fragrances that dogs are sensitive to. Products we include either carry a specific pet-safe certification or have been formulated without harsh chemicals. We're particularly mindful of hard floor cleaners and stain removers, since dogs walk over treated surfaces and inevitably lick their paws.

Ease of use for busy dog owners We're not professional cleaners, and neither are most of you. So we factor in how quick a product is to set up, how easy it is to clean after use (nobody wants a machine that's harder to wash than the carpet it just cleaned), how well the instructions actually explain what to do, and whether the product is genuinely manageable as part of a realistic weekly routine.

Value for money We cover a range of budgets across the guide, from compact and affordable picks to larger machines that are a bigger investment. Where a premium price is justified by meaningfully better results, we say so. Where a cheaper option does the job just as well, we'll tell you that too. We're not here to upsell you on something you don't need.

Long-term durability Where we've been using a product for several months or more, we note that in the review. A carpet cleaner that performs brilliantly on day one but loses suction by month three is not a good recommendation, and something you'll only find out from genuine long-term use.

We update this guide regularly as we test new products and as products we've already reviewed get updated or discontinued. Our most recent round of testing was completed in March 2026. If you spot something that should be on this list, drop us a message, we're always looking for new things to put through their paces.

FAQs

Q: What is the best way to remove dog hair from carpet?

A: The most effective method is a dedicated carpet cleaner like the BISSELL ProHeat, which uses water and suction to pull hair from fibres. For daily maintenance, a rubber-bristle brush or lint roller is faster. A grooming vacuum like the OneIsAll tackles the problem at source by capturing hair during brushing before it lands on floors.

Q: Are enzyme cleaners safe for dogs?

A: Yes, enzyme cleaners like Simple Solution are specifically designed for use in homes with pets. They work by breaking down the proteins in urine and faeces at a molecular level rather than using harsh chemicals. Always check the label confirms it's pet-safe and allow surfaces to dry fully before letting your dog back on them.

Q: How do I stop my house smelling like dog?

A: The most effective approach combines regular carpet cleaning to remove embedded odour, a pet-safe hard floor cleaner with odour-neutralising technology (like Bona), washing dog bedding weekly, and using an enzyme cleaner immediately on any accidents rather than regular cleaning spray.

Q: What should I look for in a carpet cleaner for dogs?

A: Look for a model with a dedicated pet tool for upholstery and stairs, a separate dirty water tank for pet messes, and ideally one that uses pet-safe cleaning solutions. Drying time matters too, the faster the carpet dries, the less likely your dog is to walk through it while still wet.

Q: Can I use regular cleaning products around my dog?

A: Many standard cleaning products contain chemicals such as bleach, pine-based cleaners, and certain fragrances which can irritate or harm dogs, particularly if they walk over freshly cleaned surfaces and then lick their paws. Look for products that are specifically labelled pet-safe or formulated without harsh chemicals.

Q: How often should I deep clean my carpets when I have a dog?

A: For most dog owners, a deep clean with a carpet cleaner every 2–3 months is a good baseline, with more frequent cleans if you have a heavy shedder, a puppy in toilet training, or a dog that spends a lot of time outdoors. Between deep cleans, vacuuming at least twice a week prevents hair and dander from becoming embedded in the fibres, which makes the deep clean much easier when you do it. If you notice a lingering smell even after vacuuming, that's usually a sign it's time for a deep clean sooner rather than later.

Q: What's the fastest way to deal with a dog accident on carpet before it stains?

A: Speed is everything. Blot, don't rub, as much of the liquid as possible with a clean cloth or paper towel immediately, working from the outside of the stain inward to stop it spreading. Then apply an enzyme cleaner like Simple Solution directly to the area, following the instructions on how long to leave it before blotting again.

Avoid using standard household cleaners first, as products containing ammonia can actually encourage your dog to return to the same spot. Once dry, the area should be odour-free. If any smell lingers, a second application of enzyme cleaner usually solves it.

Thank you for reading our article and we hope you've found some ideas in our review to help you keep your home and your dog clean.
