Wilsons Dog Food Review

1. Wilsons Cold Pressed Range

Let's delve into cold pressed dog food first.

Cold pressed dog food is a relatively new, innovative way to feed your dog. It's a dry dog food like kibble but that's where the similarities end.

Offering a fresh, nutrient rich alternative to traditional kibble, cold pressed is a gentler manufacturing process which preserves vital nutrients, making it easier for dogs to digest.

So why choose cold pressed dog food?

  • Nutrient-rich: Packed with essential vitamins and minerals.

  • Easy to digest: Gentle on your dog's stomach.

  • High-quality ingredients: Made with whole meats, fruits, and veg.

  • Hypoallergenic: So ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

  • Complete: It contains everything a dog needs for a nutritionally balanced diet.

  • Cost-effective: While it might be slightly more expensive than kibble, it's often more affordable than fresh or raw food.

So let's take a closer look at Wilsons cold pressed range

The first thing to say is that the range includes a wide selection of proteins, so you can add plenty of variety to your dog's diet.

Allergy friendly, the majority of recipes are grain free plus there are wheat free, chicken free and pea free options -

🐓 Chicken

🐑 Lamb

🦃 🦆 Turkey & Duck

🦌 🐠 Venison & Trout

🎣 White Fish

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Haggis

🥕🥦 Vegan

🦗Insect

All the recipes are made in their Scottish factories using high quality, locally sourced ingredients and true to their Scottish roots, they offer a haggis flavour - which is incredibly popular 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Wilsons cold pressed range receives an average nutritional rating of 72% on the All About Dog Food rating website, I don't need to tell you that this a great score for a dry dog food.

Suitable for dogs aged 2 months and upwards, they've also introduced a specific Puppy food. This grain free chicken and salmon recipe is perfect for growing puppies. It's gentle on their tummies and packed with essential nutrients.

If you're interested, there’s also a Working Dog range made with a special blend of protein and carbohydrates, ideal for active, working dogs.

For long-term feeding, Wilsons offers convenient 2kg and 10kg bags, plus money-saving bundles. With a variety of protein options, you can easily stock up for less.

In testing we found that our usually picky pup, happily ate Wilsons cold pressed. We transitioned him gently from raw dog food to Wilsons cold pressed in preparation for a holiday to France.

The transition went fairly smoothly, although we were surprised by just how much water he drank once on a dry diet! Initially, we felt that the pellets were larger than some other dry foods but this didn't appear to be an issue.

Let's mention costs. Wilsons cold pressed works out at approximately £1.26 a day for a 12kg dog so on a par with other premium cold pressed dog food brands such as Forthglade.

2. Wilsons Fresh Dog Food Range

One of the biggest perks of wet food over other types of dog food is its high water content. This can be a real game-changer for dogs who aren’t big drinkers, helping them stay properly hydrated. That in turn supports healthy kidneys and digestion.

Plus let's be honest, anyone with a picky pup knows that fresh and raw dog foods are definitely more appealing.

Wilsons Fresh range uses a gentle steaming process to cook the food whilst locking in the nutrients.

This process means that the pouches don't require freezing like some fresh dog foods such as Butternut Box and Different Dog.

So no need for freezer space, you can store the unopened pouches in your cupboard.

So let's take a closer look at their recipe range -

Fish and Beef

Beef

Venison & Duck

Lamb & Rice

Chicken

Turkey

There are also two recipes specifically crafted for puppies to fully support their growth -

Puppy Turkey

Puppy Chicken & Fish

You have a couple of options here. You could order 8, 16 or 32 pouches of the same recipe or you could opt for one of their mixed bundles if you prefer ordering a variety of proteins.

Fresh dog food will always be preiceir than dry dog food but you do have a couple of options to keep the price down.

The mixed bundles don't offer any savings, so if you are looking to keep costs down, we'd recommend ordering the largest amount (32 pouches) as it is the best price per kg. Also whilst you're at it, take advantage of Wilsons Subscribe & Save option saving 10% on the total order.

Another cost saving idea is to use their fresh food as a tasty topper with their cold pressed dry food.

It's worth mentioning that delivery is free when spending over £30 or ordering a max of two sample packs.

Wilsons also offer a Loyalty Club so you can get points on every purchase and then use these for money off. Loyalty Club members can receive exclusive rewards too.

3. Wilsons Dog Treat Range

A taste of the wild! Their treats are made from pure, natural ingredients – just like your dog's ancestors would have enjoyed.

These wholesome chews and treats are perfect for all dogs, whether they eat raw or cold pressed and because they're a great source of protein, they're gentle on your dogs tummy.

We love the guilt free treats as they're 100% natural and free from preservatives, fillers, allergens and junk, meaning wagging tails with no compromise.

The range includes 'Bites' which are the perfect size for training and popping in the treat bag for recall on dog walks. High value treats, they will keep your dog focused on you for repeat training or teaching new tricks.

There's also larger chews and treats such as rabbit ears, duck necks, pigs ears, chicken feet and beef liver for a longer lasting treat to keep your dog amused for hours.

The treat range comes in two size options and they're all in resealable bags for freshness.

4. Wilsons Supplement Range

As expected from a Scottish company, Wilsons includes a sustainably sourced Salmon Oil in their range. This super-smooth supplement is a simple and savvy way to supercharge your dog's health.

We're big fans of Salmon Oil as it's a cost-effective and hassle-free way to add nutrients to your dog's diet.

Containing those all important Omega oils which boost brain power, boost beauty (skin and coat), and support joints. It's a win-win for your dog's overall wellbeing!

We found the convenient pump was easy to use and helped dispense the right amount directly onto our dog's food. Available in two sizes - 500ml (shown here) and a bumper 1000ml.

Beyond the brilliant Salmon Oil, Wilsons offer a range of four functional supplements! These natural herbal helpers are designed to help your pup thrive.

Cleverly these little bite-sized pieces are formulated with 70% chicken, so if you have a 'Goldilocks level' picky pup when it comes to tablets, these will be perfect - no more hiding tablets in cheese !

Choose from Calming, Digestive, Joint, or Skin & Coat bites to give your pup a pawsitive boost if they need it.

Depending on your dog's size, Wilsons recommend 1 – 6 chews a day (feeding guidelines are on the website and the packaging - which we should mention is resealable and recyclable!)
