Thinking about switching your dog to raw? You're in the right place.

Raw feeding has moved from niche to mainstream, and with good reason, but it's also one of the most hotly debated topics in dog nutrition.

Here at Smart Bark, we've been feeding, testing and reviewing raw dog food for years alongside traditional kibble, wet food and everything in between.

This guide cuts through the noise. We'll look at the genuine benefits we've observed, the real risks you need to understand, and everything you need to know before making the switch, in plain English, with no agenda.

Our test dog throughout our raw food reviews is Freddie, our Cockapoo. We've tested many of the UK's leading raw dog food brands and recommend five brands and compared them head-to-head. This is the context behind everything we write.

UPDATED : APRIL 2026 We've included the latest research on the pros and cons of raw dog food and more detailed information about our testing framework

1. What Is a Raw Dog Food Diet?

A raw dog food diet, often called BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), is based on the principle that dogs thrive on food that mirrors what their ancestors ate before domestication. In practice, that means uncooked meat, organ meat, raw bone, eggs, some vegetables, and increasingly, 'functional' ingredients like seaweed, berries and mussels chosen for their nutritional value.

A BARF diet typically contains:

•       Muscle meat (chicken, beef, lamb, duck)

•       Organ meat - liver and kidney are the most common

•       Raw bone, either whole or ground

•       Raw eggs

•       Vegetables (cooked or blended for digestibility)

•       Functional foods - berries, seaweed, hemp, mussels, pumpkin

•       Dairy such as kefir or plain yoghurt (in some formulations)

There are two types of commercial raw food to be aware of:

•       Complete raw food: nutritionally balanced on its own which meets all your dog's daily requirements without needing anything added.

•       Complementary raw food: must be fed alongside other foods or supplements to achieve balance.

Read dog food labels carefully.

💡 Smart Bark Tip

The reputable brands we've tested, Bella+Duke, Paleo Ridge, Naturaw, Mersey Raw and ProDog Raw, all produce complete raw diets. Their nutritionists calculate the ratios for you. This is the safest starting point for any new raw feeder.

🐾 How We Tested: Our Raw Dog Food Journey

Everything we write about raw dog food is grounded in real experience. Our primary test dog is Freddie, a Cockapoo, and over the course of our testing we've put five of the UK's leading raw dog food brands through their paces with him over a minimum of 6 weeks, observing changes in coat, digestion, energy levels, weight and crucially, enthusiasm at mealtimes.

The five brands we tested and subsequently recommend (they didn't all make our top 5) were Bella+Duke, Paleo Ridge, Naturaw, Mersey Raw and ProDog Raw, all DEFRA-approved, all sourcing from the human food supply chain.

We assessed their ranges, packaging, followed their feeding guidelines, and cross-referenced their recipes against independent nutritional ratings at All About Dog Food.

We also called each brand. Because if someone is going to look after Freddie's dinner, we want to know they pick up the phone.

The benefits we describe in this article are what we observed. The risks we flag are the ones we took seriously. Nothing here is sponsored or paid for and our affiliate disclosure explains how Smart Bark works.

2. The Real Benefits of Raw Dog Food

Let's be honest: the research base for raw dog food is thinner than advocates would like, largely because the sector is dominated by small independent companies without the research budgets of the major manufacturers.

Most of the evidence remains observational and anecdotal.

That said, anecdotal evidence from thousands of dog owners, and our own extended testing, consistently points to the same outcomes. Here is what we've observed and what the dog-owning community widely reports:

Benefit

What We Observed / What Owners Report

Evidence Strength

Shinier coat & healthier skin

One of the most consistently reported benefits. The high omega-3 content from meat and fish-based ingredients has a well-established link to coat and skin health.

Strong anecdotal; supported by omega-3 research

Improved digestion

Smaller, firmer stools are widely reported, a direct result of high meat digestibility and the absence of cereal fillers.

Strong anecdotal

Better dental health

Chewing on raw meat and raw bone provides mechanical cleaning. Less tartar build-up observed in our test dogs over time.

Moderate - logical conclusion

Reduced fussiness

Freddie, our test Cockapoo, consistently engaged with raw food more enthusiastically than kibble. Fussy eaters tend to thrive.

Smart Bark testing & owner reports

Balanced energy levels

Without the sugar spikes associated with high-carb kibble, many owners report steadier energy throughout the day.

Anecdotal

Healthier weight management

Raw diets tend to be higher in protein and lower in processed carbohydrates, which may assist with weight management.

Moderate -logical conclusion

Boosted immune system

Less well-documented, but frequently reported by owners switching older dogs to raw.

Weak - needs more research

 🐾 From Our Testing

We've noticed that fussy dogs in particular tend to take to raw food enthusiastically. If you've been through the endless cycle of trying new kibble brands because your dog refuses to eat, raw food is absolutely worth trialling. It changed mealtimes completely for the dogs in our testing group.

3. The Risks of Raw Dog Food

Raw feeding isn't without its challenges. In the spirit of balance, and because we believe informed owners make better decisions, here is a thorough look at the genuine risks and how to manage them.

Food Hygiene & Bacterial Contamination

Because it's raw meat, there's an unavoidable food hygiene element. Raw dog food can harbour bacteria including Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli, a risk for both your dog and the humans in your household. The good news is this is entirely manageable with basic kitchen hygiene.

•       Treat raw dog food exactly as you would raw chicken from the supermarket

•       Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling

•       Disinfect all surfaces, bowls and utensils after every meal

•       Never leave raw food out at room temperature

⚠️ Important

If you have very young children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members, or anyone with a compromised immune system in your household, speak to your vet before switching to raw feeding. The bacterial risk is manageable for most households but warrants extra caution in these cases.

Bones: Benefits vs. Risks

Bones are among the most debated aspects of raw feeding. Raw bones are considerably safer than cooked ones as cooking softens bone and dramatically increases the risk of splintering, which can cause internal damage. Raw bones are pliable and designed to be consumed.

However, even raw bones carry some risk:

•       Never leave your dog unattended with a bone

•       Choose appropriately sized bones for your dog's breed and chewing style

•       Clean and disinfect the feeding area thoroughly afterwards

Most complete raw dog food brands supply ground bone within their mince formulations, removing the bone-giving decision altogether for cautious owners.

Parasites

Raw meat can occasionally contain parasites. Freezing before feeding significantly reduces this risk, which is one practical reason the reputable brands we've tested all deliver their food frozen. If you're sourcing raw meat independently, ensure it has been frozen for at least 2–3 weeks before feeding.

Nutritional Imbalances - Especially with Homemade Raw

This is the most significant risk associated with raw feeding, and the one most likely to be underestimated by enthusiastic new adopters.

Getting the ratios of muscle meat, organ meat, bone and vegetables right, adjusted for your dog's breed, age, weight, activity level and life stage, is genuinely complex. DIY raw feeding without proper research and veterinary input carries real risk of deficiency over time.

Our recommendation: start with a DEFRA-approved complete raw dog food from a reputable brand. Their nutritionists do the calculation. It's a far safer starting point than going it alone.

Cost & Storage

Raw dog food typically costs more than standard kibble, and requires adequate freezer space. Costs vary considerably between brands, our testing found monthly costs ranging from roughly £50–£120 for a medium-sized dog depending on brand and recipe.

Most companies will calculate the right daily quantity for your dog's weight and activity level if you contact them directly, don't be shy about asking.

4. Frequently Asked Questions

Is raw dog food safe?

Yes, when handled correctly and sourced from a reputable DEFRA-approved supplier. The key risks including bacteria, parasites and nutritional imbalance are all manageable. The biggest risk comes from poorly balanced homemade raw diets or lax food hygiene practices.

Can puppies eat raw dog food?

Yes, many raw dog food brands produce puppy-specific formulations. Puppies have higher nutritional requirements per kg of body weight, so it's important to choose a complete raw food specifically designed for puppies rather than adapting an adult recipe.

Is raw dog food better than kibble?

There's no universal answer, it depends on your dog, your lifestyle and your budget. Many dogs thrive on raw; others do equally well on high-quality kibble. Our how to choose dog food guide walks through the full decision.

Do vets recommend raw dog food?

Opinion is divided. Many vets express concern about bacterial risk and nutritional imbalance, particularly with homemade raw diets. An increasing number of vets are supportive of complete, commercially prepared raw diets from reputable brands. Always consult your vet before switching, particularly if your dog has existing health conditions.

How do I switch my dog to raw food?

Most brands recommend a gradual transition over 7–10 days, starting by replacing a small portion of your dog's current food with raw and increasing the proportion daily. Some dogs transition immediately with no issues; others need more time.

5. Where to Start with Raw Dog Food

If you're ready to try raw, here's our recommended starting path:

1.     Choose a DEFRA-approved complete raw dog food brand. The 'complete' designation means the food is nutritionally balanced on its own.

2.     Contact the brand directly with your dog's weight, age, breed and activity level. Every reputable brand offers this personalised guidance.

3.     Order a starter or trial pack - most brands offer these specifically for new raw feeders.

4.     Transition gradually over 7–10 days, mixing raw in with your dog's current food.

5.     Monitor stools, coat, energy and overall appetite over the first 4–6 weeks.
