Buying Guide for Dog Car Seat Covers

Car seat covers are available at a range of different price points from simple covers to custom fitted versions. Admittedly you'll pay more for the better fitting, more comfortable seat covers but the truth is that there are some great value dog seat protectors for your back seats on the market that will do the job.

Alternatively, hammocks can protect not only the seat itself, but the footwell and the back of the front car seats too. These are a great option if you don't need to carry passengers in the back seat, unless of course they want to travel cross-legged!

All the seat protectors we feature have seat belt holes for human or canine travellers.

We've provided this buying guide to give you an overview of the various dog car seat cover options and to help you decide which features are most important to you. Take a break, relax and read through our guide knowing we've got you covered !

How to Buy the Best Car Seat Cover

Whether you're looking for a car seat cover to use simply for dog walks or leave in place permanently, choosing the right cover is essential. Not only should it look good, but it needs to be comfortable for your pooch, and, of course, sturdy enough to protect your car seats.

Before you read on, here's some important factors that we think you could consider when buying a car seat cover :-

Passengers & Dogs - Our first bit of advice is to decide how you intend to use the car seat cover. Will you be using the back seat for your dog alongside human passengers? If so, a traditional seat cover will be more useful than a hammock style seat which is designed with only a dog in mind.

60/40 Split - Some dog car seat covers offer an option for a 60/40 split rear seat. If you may need to drop that back seat at times to extend your boot space, this could be a valuable option to consider.

Comfort - Seat covers have varying levels of padding and comfort for your dog. You could consider adding a blanket or bed to the car seat cover, but be aware that these comfy additions are more likely to slip around when the car is in motion.

3 door cars - If you are looking for a seat cover for the back seat of a 3 door car, you don't need to worry about protection for the side of the seats as they aren't accessible.

Style - Finally, seat covers are usually available in a very limited array of colours and dimensions. If you are looking for a cover to match your car rather than simply to protect it, then ultimately you're looking at an Orvis or customised solution which offer an extended range of colour and size options.

Here is our definitive guide to the best dog car seat covers available in the UK for 2021.

Our Picks of the Best Car Seat Covers for Dogs

1. Best Overall Dog Car Seat Cover

This convertible car seat cover from Pecute comes top of our review due to the combination of interesting design features, flexibility and of course price.

Pecute car hammock for dogs

We bought and tested this cover in a Range Rover Velar (mid-size SUV - similar size to Audi Q5) and a much smaller Ford Fiesta to see if it was as good as the customer reviews.

Firstly, the cover can be converted from a dog hammock (shown in the photo) to a traditional seat cover depending on your needs, so lots of flexibility on offer.

The side-flaps offer additional protection for the car doors if you're concerned they could be marked or damaged.

The straps attached easily to the rear handrails but check your car has handrails not hooks (like the Ford Fiesta) as they proved tricky to attach.

Pecute dog car seat hammock with mesh window

The headline feature of the Pecute car seat cover has to be the mesh window between the front seats.

It not only helps with ventilation, allowing the air to flow and your dog to stay cool, but also helps reduce your dog's anxiety as they can see both you and the road ahead.

It's a great design feature and we would recommend the integral mesh window if you opt for a hammock style seat cover.

To prevent the cover from slipping around, Pecute have added seat anchors which push into the seat base and adjustable straps for the headrests.

Pecute dog hammock with storage pockets

Two storage pockets, the zippable mesh section and the quilted finish are nice design touches and you can upgrade to include zips for a rear seat armrest.

What's more, the cover also comes with a basic seatbelt tether to attach to your dog's harness.

If you have a big enough washing machine you can throw it in!

Size wise, it was a good fit for the Range Rover Velar with a little bagging which is to be expected as it's only available in one size. On the other hand it was way too big for the Ford Fiesta, so a small seat cover for dogs option such as Orvis or Amazon Basics, would probably fit better.

The bottom line is that for a medium to large sized car, this is an impressive 'off the shelf' car seat cover and hammock which ticks all the boxes for flexibility, price and stability.

Dimensions - (L W) 146 x 136 cm

Reasons to Buy

+ Flexible hammock or simple seat cover

+ Mesh window

+ Quilted for comfort

+ Great value option

Reasons to Avoid

- Not custom fit

- No colour options

2. Best Traditional Seat Cover for Dogs

AMZPET make three really good value rear seat covers. We bought and fitted the traditional cover to see how well it performed in the rear of a Range Rover Velar (mid-size SUV).

AMZPET Dog seat cover detailing the 60/40 split seat capabilities

Constructed from several layers of material for additional comfort and durability, the seat incorporates a waterproof layer to help protect your seats from mud and accidents.

The 'skirt' helps to protect the side and base of your seats from mess whilst the adjustable headrest straps help you achieve a smooth finish.

Amzpet dog car seat cover with armrest

Let's talk flexibility. This cover allows you to unzip the middle panel to use the armrest.

Ultimately this allows you take advantage of the 60/40 split seat, so you can fold one part of the seat whilst the car seat cover remains in place. This is great if you want to extend the boot without needing to remove the cover.

All three rear seatbelts are accessible and there is an option to order a Isofix compatible version. We feature a Isofix compatible seatbelt tether later in this article.

The seat belt openings have velcro flaps when not in use and lined up so you could feed the seatbelts through easily.

cockapoo on car seat cover in rear of range rover velar

Like the Pecute seat, it has been designed with a non-slip rubber-feel backing and seat anchors which push between the seats making sure that this cover will stay firmly in place in corners.

So this is clearly a one size fits all solution and this is reflected in the price.

As you can see from the picture, the back didn't quite reach the headrests and the base didn't curve with the seat edges. However, the width was perfect and the criss-cross quilted stitching gave it a classy look and feel.

The cover can be machine washed but is obviously quite sizeable so a wipe down may be easier.

Our verdict - for the price, it did the job well and was super easy to fit and remove.

Dimensions - (L W) 133 x back 56 cm, skirt 45 cm)

Reasons to Buy

+ Allows 60/40 split

+ Seat side protection

+ Quilted for comfort

+ Isofix compatible

+ Great Value

Reasons to Avoid

- Not custom fit

- No colour options

3. Best Quality Windowed Dog Hammock

The first Orvis dog seat cover to make our Top 10 has been awarded a Orvis Smart Solution Award. The company is best known for their high quality dog products including dog sofas, blankets and of course great canine travel accessories.

Orvis windowed dog hammock for rear car seat featuring quilting for dog comfort

Admittedly more expensive than the first two options, it is beautifully made and thickly padded so a definite bonus for dog comfort.

As with the Pecute car seat cover, the Orvis seat cover incorporates a mesh panel. This creates a viewing window for your dog and improves the air flow into the back so a if your dog suffers from car sickness it's doubtless something you need to consider.

The Orvis seat cover sits between the cheaper covers featured and the customised more expensive covers, and it's price tag reflects this. What's more it's available in three colours and three sizes so you can coordinate the seat cover with your car upholstery.

Ultimately it's water-resistant, breathable, quilted and held in place by Orvis Grip-Tight® backing, so it offers a first class dog car seat cover.

Dimensions - (L W) compact 155 x 122 cm | large 168 x 130 cm | extra large 168 x 157 cm

Reasons to Buy

+ Seat side protection

+ Flexible hammock or seat cover

+ Quilted for comfort

+ 3 colour options

Reasons to Avoid

- Not custom fit

- Doesn't allow 60/40 seat split

- Pricier option

4. Best Budget Option

If you're looking for a cover which will do the job with no bells and whistles then the Amazon Basics cover could be the right option to you.

Dog laying on amazon basics car seat cover featuring headrest straps

At under £20 it's the cheapest dog car seat cover in our review.

It covers the seat base and back but doesn't offer additional protection for the seat sides or doors. This could be a positive feature if you are looking for a cover for the rear seat of a 3 door car as the seat sides aren't accessible.

It's worth noting that whilst it incorporates seat belt anchors to prevent the cover slipping about, the headrest straps are not adjustable so you may get some 'bagging' with loose material and it may not reach the headrests in large SUV's.

You can't throw it in the washing machine either as it's made from polyester so it's wipe clean only.

On a positive note, it covers the seats and offers seatbelt opening for attaching harness tethers or for human passengers. For under £20, it offers a level of protection, and whilst it may not look the best, it does a solid job.

Dimensions - ( L W) 119 x 142 cm

Reasons to Buy

+ Cheapest reviewed

+ Covers the seats

Reasons to Avoid

- Not custom fit

- Not padded for comfort

- No side seat protection

- Doesn't allow 60/40 seat split

5. Best Single Seat Cover

Now for something a little different. If you love travelling with your best friend up front then MuttStuff offer a small seat cover and dog seat in one.

Dog sitting on a Mutt Stuff front car seat showing seat protection

We love this car seat cover because it's easily installed in small cars, Ford Ka - no problem.

Although the headline feature has to be the zippable side panels which can drop down to protect the car seat and make it easier for your dog to jump in and out.

The cover is held in place with seat straps and headrest straps alongside seat anchors so it won't slip however fast you take those corners.

With a waterproof base to protect your car from possible 'accidents', the MuttStuff seat includes a seat belt tether so you don't need to buy one separately (just don't attach it to your dogs collar like the one in the photo).

Maybe add a favourite cushion or blanket in the base for for extra cosiness and you're ready to go. Can be fitted in the front or back seat but please remember to turn off the passenger airbag if you use the front seat.

Dimensions - (L W H ) 52 x 52 x 58 cm

Reasons to Buy

+ Great Value

+ Ideal for smaller spaces

+ Front or rear seat

Reasons to Avoid

- Only suitable for smaller dogs

- Not custom fit

- Not padded for comfort

6. Best Splurge Custom Cover

If you're looking to splash out on a dog car seat cover you can be proud to show off, then 'Over the Top' offer a made-to-measure, tailored dog seat cover, customised to fit your car.

Over The Top Custom Car Seat Cover for dogs showing personalisation options

Whether you own a Bentley Continental or a Ford Fiesta, Over the Top have a custom back seat cover to fit.

The cover will fit perfectly with no stretching or bagging of material ( a definite no-no in a Bentley Continental!)

Various options are available including 60/40 split to enable you to fold one part of the seat down and an extension to protect the footwell.

Available in three colours, all their custom dog seat covers are machine washable. They also offer custom boot liners and front seat covers to match.

Obviously a more expensive option, but if used regularly would be a great investment and of course it will fit your car perfectly as the picture shows.

+ Quilted for comfort

+ Colour options

+ Options for 60/40 seat split

Reasons to Avoid

- Expensive option

7. Best for Coordinating with Car Seats

US company Kurgo make products that are designed to make it easier to go on adventures with your four-legged friend.

Cockapoo dog on a Kurgo rear car seat cover showing the side seat protection

This well designed car seat cover from their UK range is water resistant, stain resistant and machine washable so easy to keep looking new.

One of the key selling points, is that this great value cover from Kurgo is available in 4 different colours to coordinate with your upholstery (most seat covers are available in one colour).

It has attachment points for headrests and anchor points to slide between the seats to keep the seat cover firmly in place.

Incorporating covered openings for seatbelts, harnesses or child seats so when they're not in use they don't allow dirt to fall through onto your seats which is a nice touch.

The design includes curved edges to the seat base cover rather than straight edges (as you can see in the photo), which offers more of a stylish fit.

The photo illustrates the cover in a BMW 5 series saloon - which has a wide rear car seat and it fits well. The only issue we found is lining up the seatbelt holes in the cover with the seatbelts underneath - it can be fiddly.

Dimensions - (L W) 114 x 140 cm

Reasons to Buy

+ Seat side protection

+ 4 colour options

+ Easy to clean

Reasons to Avoid

- Not custom fit

- Doesn't allow 60/40 seat split

- No footwell protection

8. Best Quilted Backseat Protector

The second Orvis dog seat cover to be featured in our Top 10.

Labrador dog on Orvis grey rear car seat cover showing the quilted cover for comfort

This one is a simple but classy bench seat cover. It's streamlined, extremely well made and extra-quilted for comfort ( almost as comfortable for your dog as laying on your lap!)

What's more the fabric is water-resistant and breathable.

Attaching to the rear headrests with adjustable straps, the seat cover has slits to feed your seatbelts through.

It's worth noting that not only is it available in 3 colours – grey, khaki or slate to suit your car seats but also has two width options.

For extremely dirty dogs, Orvis also sell a similar style cover made from heavy-duty polyester which you can hose down (now that's some mud !)

Dimensions - (L W ) Large - 132 x 142cm | X-large - 132 x 157 cm

Reasons to Buy

+ High quality finish

+ Extra quilted

+ 3 colour options

+ 2 width options

Reasons to Avoid

- Not custom fit

- Doesn't allow 60/40 seat split

- No footwell protection

9. Best Flexible Budget Option

Active Pets have designed a cheap dog seat cover that not only converts to a hammock but can also be used as a boot protector too. Whilst this clearly isn't custom fit, the 3-in-1 options Active Pets provide, do give you great flexibility.

Dog sitting on Active Pets Original 3-in-1 dog hammock

Simply use the additional headrest straps to convert it from a car seat cover to a hammock style. Be aware that this design doesn't include a mesh window so this may not be the best option for a dog suffering with car sickness because it will restrict their forward vision.

To use it as a boot protector simply attach the straps to the rear of the back seat headrests and lay it out in the boot. Unfortunately none of the headrest straps are adjustable so is less adaptable to different cars than some of the other covers featured in our top 10.

It's made from waterproof cotton and whilst this cover isn't machine washable it can be spot cleaned. There are seat belt openings so you have the option of seating passengers and your dog on the back seat.

Ultimately this is a great value flexible option but be aware that the headrest straps are not adjustable so check the measurements carefully to see if it's a good fit for your space.

Dimensions - (L W) - 137 x 147cm

Reasons to Buy

+ Flexible 3-in-1 options

+ Great Value

Reasons to Avoid

- Not adjustable

- No mesh window

- Doesn't allow 60/40 seat split

- No additional padding

10. Best Extra Large Seat Cover

If you are looking for an extra large car seat cover, Wimypet offer one at a great price. It's no more expensive than some of the standard sizes featured in our Top 10.

Dog on Wimypet quilted car bench seat cover showing headrest attachments

It's wider and longer than a standard cover, making it perfect for the modern pick up or extra large SUV ( the only larger cover to feature here is Orvis which is considerably more expensive)

Like the Active Pets cover featured above, this cover can be converted from a bench seat cover to a hammock using straps secured to the front headrests. It can also act as a simple boot protector.

This 3-in-1 dog seat cover has a rubber pad on the base along with the two anchors pushed between the seats help keep the cover in place.

Wimypet's cover is waterproof and should simply be wiped clean (definitely too big for a washing machine!) It also has seatbelt slits and comes with a dog seat belt to attach to your dogs harness.

Dimensions - ( L W) 152 x 147cm

Reasons to Buy

+ Large size

+ Seat side protection

+ Flexible 3-in-1 options

+ Seat Belt included

+ Great Value

Reasons to Avoid

- Not custom fit

- Doesn't allow 60/40 seat split

Crash Tested Harness

When travelling with your dog or puppy in the car, we strongly recommend a properly crash tested harness.

small dog in a blue crash tested dog harness

This Happy Ride harness from Petsafe is fully certified crash tested.

Available in four sizes with a handy sizing guide available online which takes into account the chest, neck and the weight of your dog to help you select the best fit.

A car seat belt tether attaches to the harness at one of the several attachment points and the other end clicks directly into your car seat belt system.

Padded for comfort,it's an ideal car harness.

Seat Belt Tethers

Whilst riding in any of the seats featured, your dogs harness should be tethered to the vehicle's seat belt system. NEVER attach the seat belt tether to your dogs collar, always secure to their harness.

A dog seat belt can protect from sudden braking or sharp turns as well as preventing you from being distracted as your dog tries to leap onto your lap!

car seat belt tether to attach to Isofix or seatbelt points

Whilst several of the car seat covers featured in this review do come with a tether, it may be worth investing in a multi- functional tether giving you more options.

The standout feature of this tether from Nasjac is the dual attachment clips. It gives you the option of attaching directly into a standard seat belt point, using the ISOFIX point or even the D rings in the boot. It's this multi-functionality which means it's a great buy.

This Nasjac tether is also adjustable between 53-76 cm so you can ensure it's a suitable length to keep your dog restrained comfortably.

The metal buckle means it easy and quick to attach to your dog's harness and it swivels a full 360° so no problems with your dog becoming entangled in the tether whilst you're driving.

It's also available in a range of bright colours so should be easy to find in the car at night.
