UPDATED : SEPTEMBER After a new round of testing, we’ve updated this review to include the new fresh dog foods Years.com as one of our top picks for 2024. We've also updated all our dog food articles to reflect the recent changes All About Dog Food (AADF) have made to their Nutritional Ratings.

More and more of us consider our dogs to be equal members of the family and think of ourselves as “pet parents” instead of “pet owners”.

We want to provide our four-legged friends with not only a good quality, nutritious dog food, but meals that are tailored to our dogs exact needs, on subscription and ideally delivered to our door.

The truth is that busy dog parents love stress-free regular doorstep deliveries. Let's be honest, hauling the 15kg bags of dried kibble from store to car then into your house is an ordeal.

The best on-line dog food delivery companies in the UK offer innovative options from personalised menus for dogs with allergies or sensitive stomachs to money-saving bundles, subscribe and save options and super healthy dog food. Not to mention bonuses for being a loyal customer.

Our top picks include top quality tailored dry food, cutting edge air-dried technology and three freshly cooked diet options, all super healthy and delivered to your door.

We are aware that this a long, in-depth article including a Comparison Table and Buying Advice, so feel free to jump to a section which interests you.

BUYING ADVICE

If you are looking for a great way to get high-quality, nutrition packed, tailored and healthy dog food conveniently delivered straight to your door each month, all 5 companies reviewed in our article offer that service.

Whether fresh, air-dried or kibble, these personalised diets can provide a superior alternative to the off-the-shelf products offered by the main pet food manufacturers.

dog with an empty food bowl

It's worth noting that all five companies featured, offer on-line subscription dog food which you won't find on the high street.

Whilst quality and cost are particularly important, other criteria may come into play in your purchasing decision. So before you rush out and place an order, here's some of the factors you should bear in mind.

Food Type

Delivered dog food is available in four main forms - fresh, air-dried, wet and dry. Does your dog have a preferred type of food?

Are they a picky eater? Fussy dogs on the whole tend to prefer wet or fresh foods, so if you opt for dry kibble like tails.com you may want to consider adding a wet topper.

Fresh foods are minimally processed and contain whole gently cooked ingredients. They also tend to be preservative-free, so follow the storage instructions carefully.

Consider the Cost

Undoubtably, fresh dog food is more expensive than the air-dried and dried kibble alternatives.

By completing their online questionnaire, each company will be able to provide you with a more accurate daily or weekly cost for your dog before you take the plunge.

If you have a particular picky eater, try not to continually swap foods as this can send the costs skyrocketing. Pick the best quality food you can afford and stick with it - you'll save money in the long run.

Opt for Full, 50/50 or Topper

Like the sound of a particular food but you're on a tight budget? Savvy customers look at ways the offer can fit their wallet.

Opt to use the more expensive fresh foods as a topper or half/half mixed with a kibble based food to keep the cost down.

Pay Attention to Storage

Fresh dog food has fewer or in some cases no preservatives so needs to be kept in the fridge to maintain freshness between servings.

Arriving chilled, it will need to be kept either frozen or refrigerated until it's needed. Be careful to plan your deliveries around your available freezer and fridge storage space (except Years.com).

Check the Nutritional Rating

Always check the nutritional rating of the dog food to make sure you are feeding the best and healthiest dog food you can afford.

If your dog suffers from allergies look for hypoallergenic dog food with limited ingredient which tends to be healthier and you can keep a close eye on their intake.

We've compiled this Buying Guide to offer you an overview of your options and help you decide which features are most important to you and of course your four-legged friend.

Take a break, put your feet up and ready through our guide.

Cockapoo sitting with Tails.com delivered dog food packaging

The first thing to say is that tailored dog food doesn't have to cost more than your average supermarket dog food.

With the cost of living crisis, everyone wants to offer their dog the best possible food at the best price, so tails.com are the first tailored dog food to feature in our review because they are a great value, customised dog food option.

Launched way back in 2014, tails.com offer tailor-made dry food using their unique custom-made kibble.

Online Set Up

The tails.com questionnaire takes you through a series of simple questions to create your dog’s profile online. Amongst the basic information, tails.com questions whether you would like dry or a combination of wet & dry foods.

If you decide to add wet food to your order it's worth remembering that the wet food is not tailored specifically to your dog.

Interestingly, tails.com also asks which food you currently use to minimise the risk of upsets to sensitive stomachs as you transition.

Once you've signed up for an ongoing subscription, your personalised dashboard let's you know how many days until your next delivery, you can add extra treats or wet food, tweak delivery dates and update your dog’s profile.

Plus tails.com even offer biscuits, dental chews, poo bags and monthly flea, tick and worm treatment - it's a one-stop-shop for all your dog's needs !

What's in the Bowl ?

tails dog food with the custom scoop

The kibble size and blend you receive is optimised for your dog breed. The blend tailored for Freddie (3 year old Cockapoo) included approx. 50% meat (44% chicken, 6.8% beef).

There’s no added sugar, artificial colours, or artificial flavours. Your unique kibble is formulated to support your dog's digestion, joints, skin and coat health.

Interestingly, because it's bespoke to your dog, it will adapt as they age to ensure it continually offers the precise nutrients for their health. tails.com even include a scoop, sized to help you add the perfect portion to your dog bowl.

Recipe Range

tails.com customised dry dog food

Unless you adjust your favourite flavours or special requirements on your dog's online profile, you will continue to receive the same blend.

However if your dog doesn't like the recipe first time, tails.com offer to re-blend it for free. We love this option because it eliminates any risk of changing dog foods for those of you with picky pooches.

With a 'AllAboutDogFood' rating of around 55–58% (example recipes), tails.com doesn't rate quite as highly as the other tailored dog foods reviewed here, but saying that, it is a solid score and rates higher than a lot of other well known, off-the-shelf dry dog foods.

Cost

Dog with tails.com dog food

As you would imagine for a dry food, tails.com is much cheaper than the other dog foods featured in this article. So if you're looking for a budget, tailored dog food it ticks a lot of boxes.

After the initial introductory offer, tails.com costs £26.28 for 31 days which equates to 85p a day. This was obviously kibble tailored for Freddie a 13kg Cockapoo with no allergies or sensitivities.

For a more accurate costing, we'd suggest creating an online profile for your dog - it only takes a few minutes.

So what do we think of tails.com ?

We recommend tails.com as one of the best value, tailored dry dog foods you can buy in the UK.

It's healthy and great for dogs with sensitive stomachs, has no fridge or freezer storage concerns, and get's delivered to your front door, saving you from struggling with those massive 18kg bags from pet stores.

Pure Pet Food Packaging

The Pure Pet Food range consists of innovative and balanced air dried recipes with the convenience of home delivery.

Because it's completely customised for your dog, their food can take account of any underlying health issues and allergies. So it's extremely popular with owners of dogs suffering from ailments and sensitive stomachs.

In fact, an astonishing 90% of dogs have seen an improvement, simply take a look at the amazing reviews on their website.

As well as being a super healthy dog food there are no freezer or fridge storage considerations so Pure Pet Food certainly ticks a lot of boxes!

Pure pet food packaging and a dog

Online Set Up

Their comprehensive online quiz is straightforward but in-depth, asking a number of simple questions about your dog.

Pure Pet Food also gathers information on allergies and preferences before creating a tailored 2 week Transition Pack specifically for your dog.

Unlike some dog food brands, we loved that they are extremely transparent with their ingredients and pricing so you know exactly what you're buying.

Pure also offer the option to change your personalised recipes at any time if you would like to add a little more variety to your dog's diet.

What's in the Bowl ?

Pure dog food ingredients

Pure dog food is produced very differently to fresh food or dried kibble. The company uses air dry technology.

Basically this technology removes the moisture by simply placing the food in a low-heat environment for an extended period of time. This process gives Pure all the advantages of both wet and dry food.

Simply add water, stir and allow a few minutes for the ingredients to rehydrate.

When testing, we noticed that the food had a meaty aroma which as anyone with a picky pup knows, can entice your dog.

Unlike kibble there are no harmful processed with heat and pressure involved, so the dog food retains all the vital nutrients. This is why they score so highly on All About Dog Food.

We've found that high-quality dog foods are increasingly adding natural ‘functional foods’ which can improve your dog’s quality of life as they mature.

We noticed from the ingredients list that Pure are no exception, adding blueberries, prebiotic chicory, spinach and coconut for their high nutritional values.

One final point for the eco-conscious dog lovers. As the moisture is removed from their food before transport, it weighs less, meaning less packaging and more efficient transportation, win-win!

Recipe Range

Dog eating Pure Pet Food

Pure offer a range of 7 recipes (lamb, turkey, chicken, salmon, duck, beef or herring) and you can select 2 of these for your Transition Pack.

Even if your dog has allergies, the selection available means there will be a suitable recipe and it's worth noting that their recipes vary with the highest scoring an excellent rating on 'All About Dog Food' of 80%.

So like Different Dog, Years.com and Butternut Box, Pure ranks highly on the nutrition scale and is one of the healthiest dog foods available in the UK today.

Pure Pet Food also sell a range of healthy treats which you can simply add to your food order. Whilst these aren't customised for your dog, their high quality selection includes 100% all natural, nutritionist approved ingredients.

Cost

Pure Pet Food Transition Pack

Pure are currently running an introductory offer of 30% off your first box, so it's an ideal time to try their food at a great price.

Their Transition Pack contains enough dog food for 14 days, so you can make a gradual transition.

What's more the Transition Pack includes a welcome booklet, transition guide, sensitive skin information leaflet, and handy measuring scoops.

Pure's plans start at around £7 per week. Costs will obviously vary based on your dog's age, weight, and other factors. We recommend taking the 3 minute online quiz to get an accurate plan price.

Our verdict - We feel that Pure offers you the best of both worlds. It's an innovative and popular alternative to both fresh and raw dog food, achieving that high nutritional value we are all looking for, whilst staying affordable for most dog owners.

Pure certainly ticks a lot of boxes for us including easy storage, delivered to your door and most importantly the option to tailor your food to meet your dog's nutritional requirements. If your dog suffers from skin issues, allergies or digestive problems, we would recommend taking a closer look at Pure dog food as a great option for food-sensitive fur babies.

Some very happy dog lovers out there with a Trust Pilot score of 4.9/5.

Years.com fresh dog food recipes

Years are relative newcomers to dog food. At the time of writing, Years are only 5 months old but have already made waves in a very crowded dog food market.

All their meals are created by a fine dining expert and ex-luxury Yacht Head Chef, alongside a Specialist in Veterinary Clinical Nutrition and all reviewed by their Board-Certified Vet Nutritionalist.

If fact their recipes are the best-ever rated fresh, whole-food meals on the independent advice site AADF - All About Dog Food at a whopping 96%.

Online Set Up

Years use a concise on-line quiz to gather information on your dogs.

In addition to taking into account your dog's breed, sex, ailments, allergies and activity levels, Years.com alter the balance of nutrients in their meals to take account your dog's life stage.

They also offer a range designed for puppies with puppy specific micronutrients and a unique puppy botanical blend.

Delivery of Years.com fresh dog meals

What's in the Bowl ?

Years don't simply use human-grade meats but insist on using human cuts of meat such as chicken thigh, salmon fillet and matured steak. Certainly sounds more appetising than meat meals or animal derivatives !

We were certainly impressed whilst testing, by the look and aroma of their fresh dog food. You can clearly see the range of ingredients and the food looked chunky and appetising, unlike the usual 'pate' look of wet dog foods.

Oh, and there's the Superfood Supplement to accompany your dog's meals. Tailored to your dog's breed (to address common ailments) it also contains a blend of probiotics and prebiotics to support healthy gut flora.

Dog with a tray of Years fresh dog food

However, the biggest difference between Years.com and their fresh food rivals (Different Dog and Butternut Box) is storage.

Whereas their rivals require freezing and refrigeration which can lead to storage issue for dog lovers, Years can be stored in your cupboard.

It's all down to the way their food is cooked NOT the addition of preservatives. Uniquely designed trays with steam vessels, reduce the cooking time and temperature required, so the food is minimally processed.

Their cooking process means that you can store Years in your cupboard for up to 3 months. It only needs to be popped in the fridge once opened. This is a massive plus for anyone with a relatively small fridge/freezer.

Recipe Range

A newly updated range of 5 recipes includes Chicken Thigh Mediterranean Casserole, Steak & Kidney Mushroom Hotpot, Pork Shoulder Sage & Apple Stew, Salmon & Pollock Cauliflower Bake and Turkey Thigh Cranberry Fricassee.

All include a high variety of ingredients (over 20 per recipe) with vegetables, seeds, fruit, herbs and botanicals.

It's worth noting that all recipes are grain and legume free, which is great for dogs suffering from intolerances

Years.com dog food and superfood supplement

Their website offers detailed information on each recipe and ultimately, Years.com has the highest ingredient diversity of all the dog foods featured in this article.

Cost

So you have the choice of a 2,4 & 8 week plan or you can dip your toe in the water with their amazing value 7 day trial box. This is a perfect option if you want to take a look at their food and check your dog loves it first.

Clearly long term, the 8 week plan works out the best value for money. The menu is personalised for each dog but generally small dog (6kg) plans are around £1.70, medium (12kg) £2.30 and large (26kg) from £3.20 a day.

Years were the cheapest of the fresh dog food brands to feature in our review. We feel that their pricing is clear and straightforward, detailing both daily and monthly costs.

So what do we think ?

All of the above means that if you're looking for a fresh, highly nutritious dog food, with the largest ingredient diversity we have seen, that is tailored to your dog, Years.com could be for you.

Also, if you are interested in switching to fresh but are concerned about freezer storage, we'd recommend taking a closer look at Years.com.

Different Dog dog food packaging

The first fresh dog food company we feature is Different Dog. Launched back in December 2017, Different Dog is an extremely high quality, but lesser known Butternut Box alternative.

The business was set up by a team of people who had previously worked in the pet food industry for many years and were concerned about the nutritional content of pet foods.

Of, course, the first thing to be said about Different Dog is that their premium dog food is hand cooked with nutritionalist designed recipes and they are so sure that your dog will love their food that they offer money back if the bowl isn't licked clean !

It doesn't stop there. Their recipes only include British meat, using high-quality cuts, they don't use any cheaper fillers and their packaging is eco-friendly and compostable

Online Set Up

Different Dog use a straightforward on-line quiz to access information on your dogs’ sex, age, breed, weight and activity level.

Based on this information, Different Dog outlines the ideal daily calories for your dog and you then simply select from the recipes on offer.

What's in the Bowl ?

Different Dog fresh food - ingredients and packaging

The first thing to say is that Different Dog are all about the fresh, hand-cooked dog food. Their recipes are grain free and contain at least 60% meat with seasonal fruit, vegetables and superfoods added.

The ingredients sourced locally from British suppliers where possible then cooked gently before being frozen for delivery.

All you need to do is defrost each meal and feed it to your dog either direct from your fridge or gently warmed (warming food helps when feeding picky dogs as the smell can help entice them).

Once defrosted, it lasts for five days in the fridge so each meal could easily be portioned and used as a topper for several meals.

Which brings me neatly onto packaging. Different Dog are a Certified B Corporation. Why is this important ? Well it means that they have achieved high standards of social and environmental performance.

They ensure that you and your dog benefit from eco-friendly packaging, ethical suppliers, and carbon-neutral delivery. So they are looking after your dog and the planet too.

Recipe Range

Different Dog cooked by hand

An extensive range of 12 hand cooked recipes including chicken, turkey, beef, fish, lamb, venison, turkey and fish make up their menu. It reads like a gourmet restaurant menu with Chef's Special: Venison & Thyme, Braised Beef and Lamb Hotpot !

Each recipe lists detailed ingredient information and how the nutrients benefit your dog. It's worth mentioning that their 'Health +' range is designed to support common health conditions focusing on sensitive tummies, low fat levels, kidney and liver function and support for senior dogs.

We found the website was extremely transparent, with a detailed breakdown of all ingredients. Whilst Different Dog make suggestions on the most suitable recipes for your dog based on the on-line quiz, you can read through the recipes in detail before making any changes.

Emerging scientific thinking suggests that the more diversity within a dog's diet, the stronger their digestive health leading to a healthier and happier dog.

Ideally you should be aiming to feed a variety of proteins over a two month period so the menu offers you a wide range of proteins to choose from.

Ultimately, Different Dog have an impressive 'All About Dog Food' nutritional rating of 91-93% (depending on the recipe), which is right at the top of the dog food nutrition scale.

Cost

Different Dog Packaging

You have two options to consider. You can choose to feed your dog all their meals or choose 50% as a tasty topper.

We love this budget-friendly idea as not everyone can afford to feed their dog solely on fresh delivered dog food. Using Different Dog as a topper reduces the daily price significantly whilst improving the nutritional value of the dog food.

Choosing the 'Full Monty', (100% Different Dog) the diet works out (for our 13kg dog with no allergies) at £3.43 a day.

Feeding 'Half n' Half, (50% Different Dog) brings that price down to £1.71 a day.

Yes, it's pricey, but it's also exceptionally high quality and if you struggle to feed a picky pooch or you're are looking for a high quality food or topper, it could prove to be the perfect dog food.

Constantly changing dog foods, and adding home-cooked toppers to entice, can work out far more expensive in the long run.

Their pricing is clear and it's easy to understand exactly what your costs will be going forwards.

You have three options when ordering. You can save money by ordering larger quantities but remember you will need freezer space. Alternatively, if you have limited freezer space, you can order less but this increases the daily price.

Yes it's pricey, costing more than your average dried kibble, but it is undoubtedly one of the highest quality dog foods available in the UK.

OUR VERDICT

The first thing to say is that, all five brands featured offer some of the best dog food in the UK.

tails.com offers excellent value for money and gives you the ability to personalise kibble perfectly to suit your dogs needs. So if price is the key factor, then tails.com certainly offer good nutritional value for the price.

The option to add treats, biscuits, wet food, poo bags and flea treatments to your dog's food order will definitely appeal to those of you who love a stress free life.

Pure Pet Food is priced somewhere between the fresh and dried dog food, so if the fresh alternatives are looking a bit pricey or you know you might have fridge/freezer storage issues, this is a great option.

Their personalised recipes rate extremely well in terms of nutritional value, ordering online is a breeze and they are transparent with ingredients and prices.

New to our article is Years.com. A cheaper fresh food option than both Different Dog and Butternut Box, Years.com can be stored in your cupboard and has been rated the highest fresh, whole-food meals on the independent advice site AADF - All About Dog Food at a whopping 96%. Certainly one to consider.

And lastly, Different Dog and Butternut Box both offer an excellent, nutritious and well-balanced dog food. They have all the goodness of raw food and the ordering experience is professional and efficient.
