We've put the Tapo RV50 Pro Omni through its paces across carpets and hard floors for 3 weeks. We tested it in a dog friendly home with carpets, hard floors, muddy paws and plenty of pet hair. Here's what we found.

Years ago, the idea of a mechanical maid scooting about your skirting boards would've sounded like science fiction. Now? It's simply sensible.

We were seriously sceptical about the Tapo RV50 Pro Omni. Could a puck-sized robot really rescue you from the relentless routine of vacuuming?

Would it need a PhD to programme? And most crucially, in a home hosting a hairy hound, would it hold its own against a decent manual vacuum?

Spoiler alert: this little machine is a marvel.

If you’re new to the world of robot vacuums, don't be daunted. Robot vacuums aren't the intimidating investment they once were.

The Tapo RV50 proves it: the app is beautifully simple, maintenance is minimal and clearly communicated, and the bot is smart enough to navigate your home without constantly colliding with your furniture or your furry friend.

But from all our testing and research, here's what separates the good from the great when you've got pets at home.

Vacuum and Mop Combo Wins Every Time

Suction-only robots will clean your carpets. But combo machines? They transform your entire cleaning game.

2. Setup & First Impressions

I have a confession: instruction booklets and I don't get along. My husband will happily verify this fact. I've convinced myself more than once that I can bypass the manual entirely, which has caused catastrophic consequences with routers, Sky TV boxes, and a particularly stubborn IKEA wardrobe.

But the Tapo? I was a little anxious I have to admit, but miraculously, I didn't need to wing it. The instructions are genuinely good. Clear text paired with helpful graphics made setup straightforward, even for instruction-averse people like me.

The app is equally intuitive, which you'd expect from a company trusted by 29+ million users worldwide. Tech companies nail the user experience because they have to.

There's one small gotcha (see, I always think I'm better than the instructions!), you need to attach the dust bag to the dock, but this isn't covered in the instructions. Once you spot it and realise where it clips in, it's obvious. Two minutes to resolve.

The Tapo dock is a masterclass in compact engineering. It looks polished enough to live openly in your home rather than hide away in a cupboard. The matte black finish with semi-translucent water reservoirs feels more designer homeware than appliance.

Before the Tapo maps your house, clear the way. Open doors, move anything that'll get in its path, then stand back and let it do its thing (or follow it round, watching it like a hawk like I did).

This first run is crucial because the mapping accuracy determines everything that follows. Once mapping is complete the robot returns to it's dock.

You can now head into the app to identify which rooms have hard floors versus carpets. This is the key step that unlocks the machine's full potential.

The app is incredible. It’s a weirdly accurate 3D rendering of my home, differentiating not only the floor surfaces but also furniture and stairs.

From run two onwards, I set the Tapo to vacuum throughout, then automatically mops only the hard flooring I'd flagged. No confusion. No faffing about. Simples.

But here's where the clever bit shines through. You can tailor cleaning to your reality. Identify high-use areas for more frequent attention. Set boundaries so the puck skips rooms you don't want it entering. Target pet zones for extra focus.

Change it to mop only or vac only or choose to do both simultaneously. Seriously, the customisation is really clever.

Once you understand the logic, setup feels less like a chore and more like intuitive design.

3. Cleaning Performance & Power

How Well Does The Tapo RV50 Pro Omni Pick Up Pet Hair?

Does It Pick Up Dog Hair? Low suction occasionally misses stray hair around edges as the side brushes don't drag lightweight bits into the suction path effectively. Bump it to medium or higher, and the problem vanishes.

Ultra mode is the real winner for pet hair. It's noticeably louder, but still significantly quieter than a traditional upright. For dog owners, there's little reason not to run it on maximum.

What impressed us most was the automatic maintenance. Every time the Tapo returns to dock, the cutting system activates and trims away fur and hair wrapped around the brush barrel.

This means it's genuinely clean and ready for the next run without you needing to manually pick hair out. That's the kind of friction-free ownership most pet owners dream about.

My Dyson regularly requires the scissors ritual. A delicate dance of extracting matted hair from the roller with a pair of scissors. It's tedious, time-consuming, and frankly, a bit grim.

For me, it’s the combination of vacuuming and mopping that really transformed my cleaning routine.

Rather than tackling carpets and leaving you to mop those hard floors separately, it deals with everything.

Every floor in your home gets premium treatment each time you press start. Better still, you get control. Fancy vacuum-only mode on a particular day? Or just mopping the kitchen? Just select it.

That flexibility is something suction-only models simply can't match, and it makes the investment feel far more worthwhile.

The cleaning system is beautifully simple. You slot a sealed container of cleaning solution into the dock. The Tapo automatically mixes water and solution as it goes, which sounds straightforward but reveals something important when you watch it work - water efficiency.

Traditional mopping is wasteful. You slosh water across your floors, wring out increasingly murky mop heads, and end up dry towelling everything down in a lengthy leg workout (or maybe that’s just me!).

The Tapo RV50 Pro Omni features hot water mopping at 60°C, with the dock automatically washing and drying the mop pads using hot water.

In testing, I was astonished by just how little water the robot used on each floor. Once it returns to dock, the dirty water empties into the tank (yes, we looked) and the pads get cleaned and dried automatically.

Less water means faster drying, so less streaks, and fewer slip hazards for both you and your pets.

Can it handle muddy paw prints? Here's where the Tapo gets clever. The dock detects just how dirty the water is. If it's heavily soiled from muddy paws or grime, the machine automatically sends itself back out to reclean that area.

No manual intervention. No guesswork. It simply knows when a floor needs a second pass and does it. That's the kind of smart that justifies the investment.

I know what you’re thinking, lovely dirty water sitting in the dock smelling grim, don’t. There’s an anti-odour module you slot in the tank so the water doesn’t smell whilst it waits to be emptied.

4. Navigation, Mapping & Smart Features

Multi-Floor Mapping & Obstacles

Got multiple floors? The Tapo handles that effortlessly. You can save up to three separate maps in the app, one for each level of your home.

Simply move the robot to your target floor, start the cleaning task from the app, and the bot automatically recognises which map to use. No manual switching. No confusion.

The robot won't tumble down the stairs either. Cliff sensors detect drop-offs and keep it safely on its designated floor. When cleaning's finished, the bot returns to its starting location, ready for you to carry it back downstairs.

The Tapo uses something called dToF LiDAR. In simple English, it's a laser system mounted on top that bounces light around your home to create a precise map. Think of it like the robot's version of dolphin echolocation, except with lasers instead of clicks.

But clever navigation needs more than one trick. The Tapo combines a 360-degree laser scanner with multiple laser sensors for accuracy, a front bumper for collision detection, and dual side lasers for edge recognition.

Together, they make a machine that's genuinely adept at dodging furniture, toys, and most importantly your dog lounging on the lounge floor.

The result? Precise mapping, reliable navigation, and peace of mind that your pet won't become an obstacle course challenge.

App Control & Customisation

The iPhone App is fairly intuitive. Once the maps are created, you can label them and use the app to simply start cleaning a room or several rooms in whichever order you prescribe. If you make a mistake, simply stop it and return it to dock.

You can create preset cleaning combos for different scenes, for examples Post Meal or Pet Area cleaning which will vac and then mop a zone you select rather than a whole room.

You can also choose to have Fast Cleaning everywhere or Deep Cleaning everywhere, you simply select a map. There's lots of customisation options available so you can achieve a bespoke cleaning routine for your home.

If you're incredibly organised, you can use geofencing to automate your robot to start cleaning as you leave home!

5. Real-World Testing: How Dogs React

During the initial mapping phase downstairs, he was wary. The puck itself wasn't the problem. It's remarkably quiet.

What caught his attention was the movement. Specifically, the side brushes whirring visibly as the machine skirted around furniture.

Not being the bravest of pups, Freddie barked, backed away, then summoned courage as it moved past him. Classic dog behaviour: bold when it's leaving, cautious when it's approaching.

I stayed close during that first lounge loop to avoid any anxious interactions. By the time the puck progressed to the hallway, something shifted.

Freddie had clearly worked out that this wasn't a treat dispenser. It wasn't a toy. It was just another household appliance doing its thing. His interest evaporated.

By day two of testing, they'd reached an understanding. Freddie lies wherever he chooses. The puck navigates around him.

They completely ignore each other. He's learned the puck isn't a threat, and the Tapo's intelligent obstacle avoidance means he's never in actual danger.

That's the real test for anxious pets: not immediate acceptance, but eventual indifference.

Saying that, the noise when the robot returns to dock and auto-empties is louder for a few seconds, so I’d certainly stay with anxious dogs for the first few empties until they are comfortable and conditioned to the noise. But it's no louder than the dishwasher, steam iron or vacuum.

6. How It Compares to Premium Competitors

The Tapo Rv50 Pro Omni’s standout edge isn't raw power, it's smart design married to accessible pricing. Seriously as I've said before, a robot vacuum and mop integrated system beat a robot vacuum only hands down.

During our testing, the Tapo created an accurate room map quickly and with minimal intervention. That speed and precision matter in real-world testing.

Second, the hot water mopping is simple and integrated. No faffing with separate attachments or additional purchases. The dock handles it all.

Third, the Tapo plays nicely with everyone. Alexa? Google Home? Apple Home? Pick your smart tech, the Tapo works with all of them. Most competitors at this price don't offer this flexibility.

That means you can bark an order at Alexa to start cleaning before you leave for your dog walk, or schedule it through Google Home without learning yet another app. And if you switch smart home systems in five years? The Tapo comes with you.

Based on the specifications and performance we observed, the Tapo appears competitive with similarly priced models. Where the Tapo excels is cohesion. It does many things well rather than one thing spectacularly.

Does it match premium models costing twice as much? No. But honestly? It doesn't need to. The Tapo delivers thoughtful design, Smart-home integration, and hot water mopping at a price that doesn't demand a second mortgage.

For pet owners tired of vacuuming around hair, dodging muddy paws, and hand-wringing over allergies, this bot earns its place in your home.

The real victory here is simplicity married to smart. Setup feels intuitive rather than intimidating. The app is genuinely clever without being cluttered.

The robot navigates your spaces with precision whilst respecting Freddie's personal space. And most importantly, it frees up your time for things that actually matter, like dog walks.

Is it perfect? No. The 15,000Pa suction is adequate, not extraordinary. The proprietary detergent bottles are a minor niggle. And yes, it's an investment, this isn’t an impulse purchase.
