Smelly, waxy, itchy ears are one of the most common gripes we hear from Smart Bark readers, and the shelves are stuffed with sprays, wipes, drops and flushes all promising fresh, flap-happy ears.

So we put the popular UK options to the test on real dogs, real wax and real head-shaking, to see which ones actually clean and calm, and which just cover the pong.

Quick Answer

In a hurry? Stinky Stuff Ear Stuff is our best dog ear cleaner for 2026, these drops are natural and gentle enough to be used daily. For quick outer ear upkeep we rate Bugalugs Ear Wipes; for a deeper dewaxing clean we rate ear flushes by Douxo SPA and Virbac EpiOtic Advanced.

Full disclosure: this one is personal. Freddie’s ears have always been a bit of a challenge for us. We suspect it’s a mix of those narrow ear canals, extra hair, and the genetic quirks common in breeds like Labradoodles, Cockapoos, Poodles, and Spaniels. That means constant battles with wax buildup, infections, and some pretty unpleasant smells.

  • Dirty, gunky ear - red from scratching
  • clean ear

📷 Dirty ear, red from scratching and smelly versus clean ear, calm and healthy

Staying on top of it with regular home cleaning has been the difference between a quick five-minute routine and another costly trip to the vet, cutting down both the visits and the pricey prescription products that come with them. So we know first-hand what a good ear cleaner is worth.

We tested five of the UK's most popular ear cleaners over 12 weeks.

An ear cleaner is for maintenance and mild wax, not a cure. If your dog has a genuine infection, mites, pain, redness or a strong pungent smell, see your vet first. More on the warning signs below.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Why (and how often) to clean your dog's ears

Most healthy dogs don't need routine ear cleaning as over-cleaning can actually irritate the canal and upset its natural balance.

We'd suggest that you clean when ears are genuinely waxy or dirty, or if your dog is prone to build-up (floppy-eared breeds, swimmers and doodles are classic candidates).

"Rather than apply a set timeframe to clean your dog's ears, I encourage pet parents to check their dog's ears regularly for dirt and debris and clean as needed." - Dr Danielle Bernal, veterinary surgeon with Wellness Pet Company

There are several formats you can choose from -

⭐️ Wipes clean the ear flap and the visible entrance only. Brilliant for regular, fuss-free upkeep and wiping away surface wax and grime. But bear in mind that they do not reach down into the canal.

⭐️ Drops / oils are applied into the ear to soften wax gently over time. These are great at lifting the muck, good for sensitive dogs and daily/weekly maintenance.

⭐️ Liquid dewaxing flushes go into the canal, are massaged in, then shaken out. These give the deepest clean for waxier ears.

We cover all three types of product in our review.

Our Top Picks for Dog Ear Cleaners 2026

1. Stinky Stuff Ear Stuff

Natural drops that douse the drama

📷 Getting ready to use Stinky Stuff Ear Stuff: Smart Bark

About the brand: A small, independent UK brand that started life banishing mud fever in horses and now makes 100% natural skincare for dogs (and their humans too), with a focus on soothing the source of the itch rather than masking it, all backed by a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Format: Ear drops

Price: £19.99 for 50ml

Best for: gentle daily, natural upkeep

What it is: A natural, oil-based drop (black seed, olive and coconut) that pulls triple duty: it cleans, it calms and it guards.

It loosens stubborn wax and soothes itchy, smelly ears without a hint of a sting, while its naturally anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic ingredients help keep mites and other unwanted lodgers from moving in. So it doesn't just mop up today's mess, it helps head off tomorrow's too.

Hands give a small tan dog ear drops on a grooming table in a kitchen, with towels and supplies nearby; calm care scene
📷 Testing Stinky Stuff: Smart Bark

How we tested: We opted for our usual ironing board set up with the towel and cotton wool ready. Easily applies a couple of drops over his ear careful not to go in deep with the bottle. A 15 second massage then used a finger wrapped in a cotton pad to wipe out any dirt.

Cleaning power: Works well, two drops massaged in does dislodge some wax and makes it much easier to wipe out with the cotton wool.

Smell control: The liquid has a slight medical smell, not unpleasant. His pongy ear smell had vanished after a couple of applications.

Ease of use / dog's reaction: The bottle is the smallest product we tested which makes it easier to administer. Super easy to apply.

Value: On the surface, Stinky Stuff natural Dog Ear Drops appears the most expensive product in our review. However, you only use 1-2 drops into each ear when your dog is experiencing discomfort. So the 50ml bottle lasts a long time.

We thought we'd mention that unlike anything else in this review, Stinky Stuff lets you layer the care: Ear Stuff on the outside, Food Stuff working from the inside out as a natural daily food supplement for skin, paws and coat, and Dog Stuff as a balm to soothe red, sore skin. Three angles, one routine, ideal for seasonal irritation.

Ears are one of the top spots dogs scratch, but they're rarely the whole story. If the itch is all over, read up on the common causes of itchy skin to pin it down.

Buying tip: If your dog ticks more than one box (itchy ears, paw licking, all-over itchiness or the odd hotspot), Stinky Stuff's Complete Pack bundles all three together, Ear Stuff, Food Stuff and Dog Stuff, and usually works out cheaper than buying them separately. A tidy way to tackle the itch from every angle and save a few pounds while you're at it.

Pros:

Natural, cleans, calms and guards, only need a couple of drops, can use it as part of a bundle

Cons:

Not the cheapest solution

Our Verdict: A worthy winner, gentle, natural drops that soothe, soften and shield in one go, work a treat on stubborn stinky ears, and last so long the price barely bites.

2. Douxo SPA Ear Cleaner

The gentle coco-vanilla dewaxer

📷 Checking out Douxo's Ultra-safe Ear Cleaner : Smart Bark

About the brand: Douxo is the skincare range from global animal-health company Ceva, and it's the number one topical brand recommended by vets (from a survey of 400 professionals), so you're getting dermatology-grade, soap and sulfate-free care with real clinical clout behind it.

Format: Liquid dewaxing flush

Price: £8.49

Best for: waxier, sensitive ears wanting a gentle deeper clean

What it is: An ultra-safe ear cleaner made from 97% natural ingredients and free from harsh chemicals. It uses gentle but effective natural dewaxers that dissolve wax, and comes with a long soft rubber tip for squirting the solution straight into the canal without poking.

How we tested: Aimed the soft rubber tip into the canal, squirted, massage both ears at the base for 15 seconds, let him shake to loosen the gunk. We then wiped away the excess and debris with cotton wool pads around the canal, folds and outer ear.

Curly tan dog gets ear drops from a Douxo held by a hand indoors, looking calm.
📷 Applying Douxo's Ultra-safe Ear Cleaner : Smart Bark

Cleaning power (canal): Worked like a charm, lifted the dirt and gunk with no fuss.

Smell control: Left both ears smelling of a lovely coco-vanilla scent, a huge step up from before. Easily the best smelling product in this lineup.

Ease of use / mess factor: We loved the soft applicator tip and the long, transparent nozzle. It definitely makes it easy and safe to apply without hurting your dog's ears. Unfortunately the bottle didn't suggest how much to dispense 'squeeze to dispense the product' so we guessed.

We chose to use it as a flush, so applied plenty of liquid. If you don't want this flying all over your carpets and furniture when your dog starts shaking their head, we'd suggest use it in the kitchen with wipe clean floors or maybe the garden!

Value: £8.49 for 120ml

Pros: 97% natural, gentle soft-tip applicator, vet-recommended, gorgeous coco-vanilla finish.

Cons: That long nozzle tempts you to go too deep. Keep the tip in your eyeline and squeeze slowly, so you can see just how much you're dispensing.

Our Verdict

Clever design, loved the flexible long nozzle and the Douxo coco-vanilla signature scent is fabulous.

Douxo SPA's Ear Cleaner is a bit of a Smart Bark favourite: it also features in our guide to grooming your dog at home like a pro, where we show how a quick ear clean slots neatly into an easy top-to-tail routine.

3. Bugalugs Soothing Ear Wipes

Wallet-friendly weekly wipe-round

📷 Bugalugs Soothing Ear Wipes : Smart Bark

About the brand: A family-run UK brand founded in 2020 and already one of the country's best-selling pet-care names, Bugalugs makes a huge range of affordable, human-grade grooming and health products you'll spot everywhere from Asda and Sainsbury's to Pets at Home.

Format: Wipes (100 pack)

Price: £11.99

Best for: quick, cheap upkeep

What it is: Pre-soaked, textured biodegradable wipes with a citrus blend, aimed at head-shaking, itching, wax and odour. Once or twice weekly, fresh wipe per ear.

Hands clean a fluffy tan poodle’s ear with a ear wipe indoors, calm grooming scene with soft background.
📷 Putting Bugalugs Soothing Ear Wipes through their paces : Smart Bark

How we tested: These are small, think cotton wool pad size. Thicker than general wipes and very wet. We used three wipes on each ear.

Cleaning power: So these are aimed at the surface of the ear not to be pushed into the ear canal. For a super grab and go option, these wipes are ideal. The airtight container keeps the wipes moist and fresh.

However they aren't going to deal with any build ups within the ear canal, but the wipes are one of a wider Bugalugs ear care range that also includes a bottled Soothing Ear Cleaner (£10.99, the same formula as the wipes), Antiseptic Ear Drops (£9.99) for problem ears, and a newer Pre, Post + Probiotic Ear Cleaner (£11.99).

📷 Bugalugs extended ear care range: Smart Bark
📷 Bugalugs extended ear care range: Smart Bark

Handy to know the wipes and the Ear Cleaner solution are essentially the same soothing formula in two formats, so you can pick whichever suits your routine.

Smell control: Whilst the wipes worked on the dirt around the outer ear, the smell tends to come from a buildup of yeast, debris inside the ear so no change.

Ease of use / texture: Preferred these smaller, thicker, wetter wipes to the standard size. Easy to use.

Value: 12p per wipe so slightly more expensive than standard dog wipes

Pros: Smaller, thicker wipes are easier to get into those crevices, mix and match with other Bugalugs products in the Ear Car range

Cons: Only reaches around the outer ear and the folds.

Our Verdict: We think it's worth spending that little bit extra on specific ear wipes. They are designed to deal with ear crevices and you don't need additional cotton wool. Also like to additional range although a money-saving bundle would be a nice touch.

4. Virbac EpiOtic Advanced

The vet's trusty all-rounder

Virbac EPIOTIC ear cleanser bottle beside stacked cotton pads on a kitchen counter, with an orange towel in the background
📷 Virbac EpiOtic ready for testing : Smart Bark

Format: Liquid canal flush (60ml / 125ml)

Price: £8.99 / £12.50

Best for: the reliable everyday flush

What it is: The ear cleaner you will spot on nearly every vet's shelf. A pH-neutral flush using salicylic acid to lift wax and dead skin, plus Virbac's glycotechnology (sugars that stop bacteria sticking) and Defensin plant extracts. A long-standing UK best seller (4.8 stars across 100+ reviews).

How we tested:  This one is slightly different. The instructions say to fill the canal with ear cleaning solution. That seemed like a lot, but maybe that will dislodge wax and debris more effectively. Then massage, let them shake, wipe with cotton wool.

Person applies ear drops to a tan poodle lying on a table, close-up in a home setting, calm and caring.
📷 Flushing the ear with Virbac EpiOtic: Smart Bark

Cleaning power (canal): This one worked really well, with lots of dislodged debris coming away on the cotton wool pad after the massage.

Smell control / deodorising: Whilst the liquid didn't have any noticeable scent, the dodgy ear smell went away in a week.

Ease of use / mess factor: This is a lot of liquid, so be prepared for a lot of head shaking.

Value: This is better value per ml than Stinky Stuff, but it is a' flush', so you'll be using significantly more per application.

Pros: Vet-trusted, affordable, gentle pH-neutral

Cons: The messiest of the products to administer because of the sheer volume of liquid used in the flush.

Our Verdict

This one is a pay off between mess and results. Freddie really wasn't keen on the amount of liquid in his ear, but it is only whilst you massage, then a lot of head shaking.

5. Earth Rated Dog Wipes

The multi-tasking money saver

Green Earth Rated wipes box with tissues, a teal balloon dog, and a Smart Bark Product Testing Performa form on a white table.
📷 Testing Earth Rated Dog Wipes : Smart Bark

About the brand: A proudly Canadian, Montreal-born brand and certified B Corp that started with better poo bags back in 2009 and has since become a dog-owner favourite for plant-based, planet-friendly everyday essentials.

Format: Multi-purpose grooming wipes

Price: £8.99 for pack of 100

Best for: everyday multi-tasking, and doubling up for a quick ear-flap wipe

Why it's here: This is Earth Rated's general grooming wipe, not their dedicated ear wipe, and that is the point. A good multi-purpose wipe earns its place in the cupboard by turning its paw to muddy pads, mucky bums and, yes, a quick wipe round the ears.

If you would rather a purpose-made option, Earth Rated also make a dedicated Dog Ear Wipe, but here we wanted to show how one versatile wipe can cover the lot.

What it is: Plant-based grooming wipes with aloe, shea butter and chamomile. Thick and slightly textured, hypoallergenic, so gentle enough for sensitive, allergy-prone skin. They're available in packs of 100 or 400, and in lavender, white tea & basil, or unscented.

Small brown curly dog being wiped with a tissue on a green blanket beside an Earth Rated pet wipes package.
📷 Testing the thickness and scent with an outer ear clean : Smart Bark

How we tested: The pack reseals with a satisfying click and keeps the wipes moist. In fact out of all the wipes we've reviewed over the years, this is the best packaging to keep those wipes fresh.

Each 21 x 19 cm sheet is nimble enough to work into the ridges and wrinkles of the ears yet big enough to lift mud from their coat without covering your hands. They feel premium and don't tear, even around the messier end.

Using them on ears: Fold a fresh wipe over your finger and gently clean the visible flap and the entrance only, one wipe per ear. Like any wipe, they clean what you can see and reach, not down inside the canal, so pair them with a flush or drops for a deeper clean.

Value: The best-value wipe here, at around 9p a wipe

Pros: resealable click-shut pack, scented and unscented options, gentle and hypoallergenic, thick, textured and tear-resistant, great value pick.

Cons: a general wipe, so it cleans the ear flap and entrance only, not the canal (for that, reach for a dedicated flush or drops, or Earth Rated's own Ear Wipes).

Our Verdict

An all-round excellent, great-value wipe that doubles up nicely for quick ear upkeep between deeper cleans.

Earth Rated is no stranger to Smart Bark. Over the years they've picked up praise across our reviews, from our best dog wipes and dog poo bags to their handy poo bag holders, plus a spot in our best dog shampoos guide and our enrichment toys picks. From poo to paws to playtime, they're a brand we happily keep coming back to.

How to clean your dog's ears safely

Our Top Tip (set-up matters):

Before we start, we pop Freddie up on the ironing board. It sounds daft, but it works a treat. It raises him to a comfy height so we can get a proper look into the ear canal, the narrow surface limits his wriggling, and it means one of us can clean while the other keeps him calm and still with a steady supply of treats. Two pairs of hands and a raised, settled dog make the whole job quicker and far less stressful for everyone.

1

Gather your kit. Cleaner or wipes, cotton wool, a towel and plenty of treats

2

Apply your chosen product. For a flush, tip the solution into the ear entrance; for drops, follow the dose; for wipes, use the textured side.

3

Gently massage the base of the ear for several seconds to loosen the wax.

4

Let them shake. This brings debris up and out.

5

Use cotton pads or wipes to gently wipe away debris. Start from the inside of the ear, only as far as your finger can easily fit, which is about one knuckle in, and work your way to the outside ear flap.

6

Reward. Finish on a treat so ear time stays happy.

Never use cotton buds or swabs. You risk pushing debris deeper or damaging the eardrum.

Signs of an ear problem: when to see the vet

"Common causes of ear infections in dogs include allergies, skin conditions, ear mites, and a build-up of wax and appear to directly cause inflammation, while others (such as certain bacteria, yeasts, or a middle ear infection) perpetuate the condition. Identifying these factors is key to successful control of inflammation. Unless all the causes are identified and treated, the condition may return."

Written by Dr. Mariella Roberts, Veterinary Surgeon, Animal Trust Vets CIC

See your vet if you notice:

🚨 Persistent head-shaking or scratching

🚨 Redness, swelling or heat

🚨 A strong, pungent or yeasty smell

🚨 Dark brown or bloody discharge

🚨 Pain, whining or head tilt

🚨 No improvement after gentle cleaning

FAQ

How often should I clean my dog's ears?

Less often than you might think. Most healthy ears look after themselves, and over-cleaning can upset the ear's natural balance and cause more irritation than it solves.

As a rule, clean when they're genuinely waxy, smelly or your dog starts scratching, and check them regularly rather than sticking to a rigid schedule. Floppy-eared breeds, swimmers and hairy-canal doodles like our Freddie tend to need a closer eye than most.

Can I use cotton buds or human ear cleaner on my dog?

No to both. Cotton buds risk pushing wax and debris further down the canal, or worse, damaging the eardrum, so stick to cotton wool or a soft pad and only go as far as a finger comfortably reaches. Human ear drops aren't formulated for dogs either, so always choose a proper dog ear cleaner like the ones we've tested here.

Are ear wipes as good as a proper ear flush?

They do different jobs, so it depends on the mess. Wipes like Bugalugs and Earth Rated are brilliant for quick, everyday upkeep of the ear flap and the bit you can see, but they can't reach down into the canal.

For genuinely waxy, gunky ears you need a canal flush such as Virbac Epi-Otic or Douxo SPA, or natural drops like Stinky Stuff, that get down where the trouble hides. Many owners use both: a flush now and then, wipes in between.

Can an ear cleaner treat a dog ear infection?

No, and this is an important one. An ear cleaner is for maintenance and mild wax and dirt, not a cure.

If your dog has an actual infection, ear mites, pain, heat, redness or a strong pungent smell, no cleaner will fix it, and using one could make a sore ear worse. It's vet first, cleaner second, then a cleaner can help keep things in check once your vet has given the all-clear.

Are natural dog ear cleaners any good?

They can be excellent for gentle, everyday care. Natural options like Stinky Stuff's black seed, olive and coconut drops soothe and soften wax without harsh chemicals or stinging, which suits sensitive dogs and daily routines. That said, "natural" still isn't a treatment for infections, so the same rule applies: for anything beyond routine upkeep, see your vet.

Whichever you pick, your pup's ears will thank you, less scratch, less stink, more tail wags all round.
