Meet the Roolo, a UK-designed toy from Play9 that will have your dog chasing its tail with excitement. This pyramid-shaped puzzler rolls and wobbles unpredictably, just like prey, dispensing treats as it tumbles to reward that problem-solving brain.


The first surprise in testing was the movement. One nudge of the nose or a poke of the paw and it spins off erratically across the floor. Food-motivated pups adore it, and it is the perfect way to satisfy natural foraging instincts.


Made from super-durable TPR, the Roolo suits dogs of all sizes and handled plenty of rough play without a hitch. Its clever shape means nothing can break off or be swallowed, though as with any toy we always recommend supervised play.

We've also been putting Play9's all-natural Tuki's treats through their paces, and honestly, they've won us over.


The little Ox Heart treats pop perfectly into the Roolo, turning snack time into proper interactive play, and we love that they're free from fillers, grains and additives.


Now, a heads up from our own testing: the Roolo doesn't come apart for cleaning, so we'd stick to dry food and treats and swerve anything soft and crumbly. A fill of water every now and then flushes out the crumbs a treat.


Ours has been on active duty since April 2024 and, bar a few honourable scrapes, it still looks as good as new.

2. 🏆 Longest Lasting: Woof Pupsicle


Smart Bark score: 9/10


Why it won: the Pupsicle earned our Longest Lasting award for one simple reason, it buys you time. Freeze it, hand it over and get 15 minutes of blissful, low-mess licking. Perfect for crate rest, calm-down sessions or a peaceful cuppa.

If you need a toy that turns treat time into a proper project, the Woof Pupsicle is the one. Rather than dispensing quick wins, it hides a frozen treat "pop" inside a chunky rubber shell, so your dog has to lick, nudge and work away to earn every mouthful.


It is licking, not chewing, that does the calming here, which makes the Pupsicle a lovely choice for anxious dogs and settle training.


Using it couldn't be simpler. Unscrew the two halves, pop in a treat (Woof's own refill pops, or freeze your own with a little broth, yoghurt or wet food), screw it back together and hand it over.


Freezing is where the magic happens, stretching a two-minute treat into a proper time-filler.


It is made from non-toxic, BPA and phthalate-free natural rubber, and comes in small (for dogs roughly 4.5 to 11kg), medium (11 to 34kg) and a large for the big lads, so there is a safe size for most breeds.


One heads-up: the natural rubber contains latex, so skip it if your dog has a latex sensitivity.


On cleaning, the two halves unscrew fully and it is dishwasher safe, top rack only to keep it in good nick.

In testing, the biggest surprise was the stillness. I had assumed our tester Freddie would send it skidding round the kitchen, but no.


He stood and licked, and licked, and licked some more, perfectly content to stay put. That makes it a bit of a summer saviour, spot on for when it is too hot to walk and you are trying to keep your dog calm, still and in the shade.


There is no mess to mop up either, and the thick rubber has a properly tough look to it.


One money-saving tip from testing: you can make your own refill pops rather than buying Woof's. I did have a good giggle at the official recipes, mind. I love my dog dearly, but I will not be whipping up homemade cranberry jam for a posh swirl effect. Mashed banana, a dollop of plain yoghurt and a few crushed dog biscuits, now that I can manage. 🤣

It is surprisingly hard to find dog toys that look lovely around the home and keep your dog happy. The Earth Rated range nails both. Shaped like a rubber vase, it wobbles and bobbles about, trailing treats wherever it rolls.

Made from responsibly sourced rubber in two sizes, it stands up to serious chewing, and Earth Rated suggest sizing up for any super-chewer tendencies. The 2cm treat opening suits smaller treats and most kibble (we used Scrumbles 60% Chicken), or Park Life's Nibbles.


It is dishwasher safe (top rack) and freezer safe for frozen treats.

Sniffing for ten minutes can tire a dog as much as an hour's run, so nosework is a rainy-day winner. Simply scatter treats or kibble through the strands and watch your pup forage away.

We particularly like the two straps that fix it to a chair or table leg so it doesn't skate across the kitchen floor. It measures 45cm across and machine washes at a low 30°C (no tumble drying, please).


We have used ours regularly for five years and it still looks brand new, though no mat is truly indestructible, so supervise your dog.

Keeping enrichment toys safe


A quick safety checklist we run on every toy, and one you can use at home:

  • Size it right. Too small is a choking risk, too big and your dog can't engage. Check the weight guides.

  • Supervise new toys. Watch how your dog plays before leaving them to it, especially with a determined chewer.

  • Bin the broken ones. Chewed-through rubber, loose squeakers or frayed rope fibres are a swallow risk. When in doubt, throw it out.

  • Match toughness to chew style. Power chewers need power-chewer toys. A soft plush won't last five minutes.

  • Watch the fillings. Keep an eye on calories if you feed treats through toys, and avoid anything your dog reacts to (latex rubber included).
